[oS-EN] New monitor when sent to sleep doesn't awake
Hi, I have a new monitor on this old machine at a secondary location. Got it cheap, a returned item to a shop. An LG 22MP410, connected to my old machine with Nvidia graphics. The problem is that (apparently) when the desktop sends the display to sleep for inactivity, pressing a key doesn't wake it up. Nor disconnecting both cables. What works is pressing the menu key of the monitor. I am using XFCE desktop on Leap 15.4. Screensaver is disabled. Power Manager / Display is set to - Blank after 10 minutes - put to sleep after 10 minutes - Switch off after 30 minutes. But it is all deactivated! (I had it deactivated for the previous display, decades old hardware, that would hang the machine on sleep. I will try to activate it and see). Hum... Now that I write this, I'm suspecting that it was "powered off". But this thing doesn't have a power on/off switch! It has a... tiny "joystick" in a recess under the bottom edge. It can be pressed, which activates the menu, and moved to the sides as a cursor key. I found it by blind touching everywhere this morning. The papers don't mention it. Maybe it went to sleep because the monitor, not the computer, decided so... no, that is set to 4 hours. It was the computer. Some LG monitors have an inbuilt Automatic Standby Mode. Could it be that? There is normally a menu entry for setting it off. DisplayPort versus HDMI may also make a difference. DisplayPort seems to have more ability to signal the state of the monitor - which is not always a good thing.

I'll try that tomorrow, today I'm at home.

It only has one HDMI port. And one VGA (D-Sub) It is this one (but I don't see the "-B" in the box <https://www.pccomponentes.com/buscar/?query=LG%2022MP410&> <https://www.lg.com/es/monitores/lg-22mp410-b> -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.4 x86_64 at Telcontar)

It's bitterly cold in Japan from today, and the attention to the elderly is bothering me, so I'm going to bed too.
15°C inside the bedroom this past night. A 3KW stove in the computer room for an hour and I am reaching 19°C now. Almost confortable. An this is the south-east of Spain at the Mediterranean coast.

Ah, I see.
I suspected the influence of the CPU's power saving mode.
We'll see tomorrow :-) -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.4 x86_64 at Telcontar)

I think it was set to 4 hours, but tomorrow I'll try to set that off. Maybe it did not detect the day activity?
That was it. I happened to be at the machine, typing, when a black box popped up saying that the monitor would switch off in 5 minutes because there was no activity. So I changed that from 4 hours to off. We'll see if that does the trick. Funny it does not see the activity. It is a monitor, not a TV... -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Is it a second monitor and almost all activity happens on your main monitor? The monitor firmware will be looking for changes in content. If there are no changes, it will trigger standby. If you ran a clock, cpu-meter, network-meter, or similar on that monitor, that should be enough change to keep it awake. But yeah, I'd turn it off.

No, single monitor of a secondary machine. My previous desktop machine, with over 10 years of use, set at another location. New monitor, but a refurb.

Well, I was using the machine and doing things all the morning.
But yeah, I'd turn it off.

The joystick is in the manual - page 10, "User Settings". I also have some system combinations where monitor blanking/power-saving just does not work - I believe it is most often a driver issue, but I have never really had sufficient time/help to look into it. Fortunately, it is no longer a really important issue, but it still would be nice to have. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (2.1°C) Member, openSUSE Heroes (2016 - present) We're hiring - https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Heroes

Ah, must be the online extended manual. Not in the papers I got. Or being a refurb, that paper was missing.

Indeed. I suspect card-driver issues, because the previous monitor, a very old old one (flat, not CRT, 4/3 form factor, low res) had trouble as well. Being old, I thought it was just that, changed protocols. But this one is new, so it may be that the nouveau toolset doesn't fully handle this card. And proprietary driver is hell in this machine (not supported any longer, old card), it was one of the reasons I bought another machine with AMD (this is my previous desktop machine). -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E.
