[opensuse] kde3 - all control panel apps are still gone
Will, Dotan, All, On my 11.0 kde3 install, all control panel apps disappeared a few weeks ago and haven't returned. I have made a number of attempts to find out why and tried all the suggestions from the last thread, but still no joy. Try running kbuildsycoca --noincremental. This rebuilds the cache of all the .desktop files on your system, including those that define the kcontrol tree. However, if your sycoca was broken, I'd expect you to be telling me that your K menu wasn't working and that apps weren't finding their plugins. Also, check that /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER is writeable. Changed nothing here.

It is. I then did another zypper ref; zypper up. 36 packages affected, mostly KDE stuff. Nothing changed as result. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." After my last thread post I tried zypper dup. That pulled about twice as many packages, again mostly KDE. Well, on 11.0, I just tried reinstalling kdelib3 and kdebas3 from repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_11.0/ and no change. All kcontrol modules are still gone from my x86_64 box. I have an i586 box with about an identical setting/packages/etc.. and the modules are fine. Who knows... The weird thing is that while kcmshell --list returns nothing, I can use: kcmshell <module name> and it works?? I rarely use it so I guess I didn't notice until now. so your sycoca idea may be gaining traction. What do I check for it?
As I mentioned before,
1) check that /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER is writeable, not full, and that the file ksyscoca exists and is not empty in that dir
2) run kbuildsycoca --noincremental to recreate ksycoca

Will, Here is another tidbit. After running kbuildsycoca, I created another new user to test. On 1st login, the "favorites" were all there in the suse menu, but there was no applications at all. Maybe this provides another clue to the menu riddle? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Will, I came up with an ugly hack that works while we are figuring the problem out. I just grepped kcmshell in /opt/kde3/share/applications/kde and parsed down the list to the ones I need and then just put the list in a short script: #!/bin/bash kcmshell background bell clock colors componentchooser desktopbehavior desktop desktoppath display filebrowser fonts icons kcmfontinst kcmkded kcmnotify kcmsmserver kcmtaskbar kcm_useraccount kdm kdmtheme keyboard keys khotkeys kresources ksplashthememgr kthememanager kwindecoration kwinoptions kwinrules lanbrowser mouse panel printers screensaver sound style & I can't figure out why the system isn't doing it on its own anymore. Will, My kickerrc looks very strange. (at least to me). I looks like it has way too much stuff in it.

Will, Just an update all kde3 kcontrol apps are still gone and all menu entries are still missing as well. But it seems like I am in good company, there are a ton of posts on this in the past 60 days. I googled "kde3 kcontrol empty" and turned up a lot of posts. I have worked through: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?p=39506 which seemed most promising, but to no avail..., sigh.. The link to kde-applications-merged made no difference. Just wanted to let you know that both issues are still floating around. Do you think downgrading kdebase3 apps back a month or two is a reasonable idea? It won't fix anything if we find where it is working, but it might tell us when it died. My guess is still late Feb. When you can devote a minute or two of leisure time, let me know and I'll be ready to help :p -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Just for completeness, Gentoo seems to have seen the issue before related to kbuildsycoca4: http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/gentoo/amd64/205799 dunno if this will help, but more information is always good. :-) -- David C. Will, you were right - my menus are gone....

Will, I know you are still swamped, but maybe you can think of something in /opt/kde/... to check, or maybe the weird ../kdecache-david/tmp dir (addressed below) could be the problem. All menus (except the custom menu entries I have created) and kcontrol are still blank. I've confirmed that /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER is writable -- and in fact is updated with each kbuildsycoca --noincremental, so those can be eliminated as problems. As I mentioned before, I have an x86_64 box that has the problem with no kcontrol entries and no menu entries while I have another 11.0 i586 box configured identically where everything is OK. I don't know if there is anything in /opt/kde3 I should check, but after pulling my hair out with all gnome mime types disappearing and then trying 'update-mime-database -V /usr/share/mime' to no avail, and then stumbling across the post saying "try it as 'update-mime-database /opt/gnome/share/mime'" after which... viola, all mime function were restored, that got me thinking whether the current kde3 problem might have a similar solution somewhere in /opt/kde3? The solution has got to be simple -- albeit elusive. As for the kbuildsycoca tests: 11:44 alchemy:~> l /var/tmp/kdecache-david/ total 7704 <snip> -rw-r--r-- 1 david dcr 3388997 2010-04-16 04:04 ksycoca <snip> -rw-r--r-- 1 david users 1176 2010-04-16 04:04 ksycocastamp 11:44 alchemy:~> kbuildsycoca --noincremental kbuildsycoca running... 11:45 alchemy:~> l /var/tmp/kdecache-david/ total 7704 <snip> -rw-r--r-- 1 david dcr 3388997 2010-04-16 11:45 ksycoca <snip> -rw-r--r-- 1 david users 1176 2010-04-16 11:45 ksycocastamp 11:46 alchemy:~> kcmshell --list The following modules are available: 11:49 alchemy:~> On the i586 box (zephyr): 11:46 zephyr:~> l /var/tmp/kdecache-david/ total 6140 <snip> -rw-r--r-- 1 david dcr 2777690 2010-04-09 23:46 ksycoca <snip> -rw-r--r-- 1 david users 918 2010-04-09 23:46 ksycocastamp 11:46 zephyr:~> kcmshell --list kbuildsycoca running... Update - /var/tmp/kdecache-david/tmp didn't have anything to do with the problem. I deleted (moved) /var/tmp/kdecache-david while in gnome, then logged back into kde. All the files were regenerated like they should have been, but still no menus or control panel applets. It seems like all of the kde data (menu, etc.) files are there, it's like kde just isn't reading them. One thing that is strange on the missing menu issue is that all menus are empty except (1) the submenus I added -- AND -- (2) Utilities -> Editor menu. Strange. All menus generally look like this: (52k) http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/bugs/kde3/k3_no-menus_02.jpg where you open a submenu and all you get is a little 'stub' window sticking out. But for reasons that make no sense to me, the normal Utilities -> Editor menu is fully populated and functional: (128k) http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/bugs/kde3/k3_no-menus_03.jpg It's like the file that holds the menu data is corrupt up to the point of the 'Editor' menu and the is corrupt again for everything after it as well. Oh yes, several I added new users, dcrta, dcrta1, etc.. and I makes no difference. You log in under the new account all files in /var/tmp/kdecache-<user> are created just fine, but still No Menus and No kcontrol modules??
2-No help to login as root?
Nope, root is affected just as any other user, so it isn't a permissions issue.
3-Tried completely removing KDE3 and then reinstalling, both home files and global?
This I haven't done yet, but it is a possibility. I was hoping that we could actually drill-down to find out what the problem is rather than just throwing in the towel and wiping and reinstalling kde3. I say this because it isn't just me. There have been problems with other distros as well. It seems to be x86_64, and it seems to affect those that have both kde3 and kde4 installed and usually starts after a kde4 update. But nobody, that I can tell, has ID'ed the issue yet.

That is the funny part. I have 2 laptops both run 11.0 (ATI issue), both have the exact same kde3 install from the same repos and the i586 box works just fine and the x86-64 box has the no menus, no kcontrol module problem.
