I rarely use it so I guess I didn't notice until now. so your sycoca idea may be gaining traction. What do I check for it?
As I mentioned before,
1) check that /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER is writeable, not full, and that the file ksyscoca exists and is not empty in that dir
2) run kbuildsycoca --noincremental to recreate ksycoca

Will, Here is another tidbit. After running kbuildsycoca, I created another new user to test. On 1st login, the "favorites" were all there in the suse menu, but there was no applications at all.
