I know that kword can import Office97 .doc files. I am able to do that with my "main" pc, but I am not with my portable PC. What I forgot to install? I just used a stardard installation on my portable. Tazio

Check the version of KOffice you installed (open KWord and click Help / About KWord. If you want to be able to open MS Office files, you should have version 1.1 (beta 3 now I think). If you have an older version - like 1.0 (this is the version on the SuSE 7.1 disks) you need to do an upgrade. Clayton

I use koffice version 1.1 beta 2, and kde 2.1.2. I updated everything with rpms from suse's ftp. Tazio

Odd.... that is the same combination I have on my system, and it works fine when I open MSWord docs in KWord. No special configuring needed when you use the SuSE rpms. Are you getting any error messages? What is actuall happening on the laptop when you try to open a MS Word document with KOffice? Does it try to open and fail part way through? Does it refuse to even try to open the file? Clayton

The .doc filter does not appear in the filters list. Is this normal? Tazio

Just select All files, and pick your MSWord doc. I just checked my install of KDE1.1 Beta2 and *.doc is not in the filter list, but KWord seems happy to open MSWord files. C.
I reistalled the rpm, and the problem disappeared. I have had success in adding .doc in the filter list, by selecting a doc document in konqueror and make it use kword to read it. I did the same with kspread, too. It was just the missing MIME type that made it not appear in the filter list. Staroffice.. deinstalled at last! Thanks all for the suggestions, Tazio
I have followed your discussion on SLE. I have exactly the same problem but reinstallation of the RPM doesn't fix it. When I try to open a .doc file with kword 1.1beta3 I receive a messagebox saying that there is no filter for application x-doc. I did associate application/x-doc with kword in the konqueror list of mime types, but it won't open them. I am using kde 2.2 beta from ftp.kde.org on suse 7.2. Can you think of something else that you might have done that restored the functionality? Many thanks, Henry Harpending On Thursday 05 July 2001 03:41 pm, Tazio Ceri wrote:

I am one of the people that still have not received 7.2.... even though I preordered it, but that's another rant. So... I don't know if it is related to the 7.2 thing... doubt it. My suggestion.... remove KOffice completely from your system, and reinstall with the latest build from the KOffice website (or the RPMs from SuSE). I have had similar problems with other apps, and this was what was suggested to me... seemed to work for other apps that were giving trouble. Later C.

Really? That's an outrage. I got mine June 26, but that's only because I live on the other side of the country (i.e. they sent out on June 16, but UPS took 6 business days, damn it). What excuse did SuSE give you? -- noodlez: Karol Pietrzak PGP KeyID: 0x3A1446A0

No excuse or reasons were given at all. To add to the frustration, I live a few hundred kilometers away from Nurnberg. I could have drove over to the SuSE head office and picked it up myself on the weekend. So far everyone I have talked to who pre-ordered a copy here is still waiting.... 3 weeks on since the release. I wouldn't mind so much if they had contacted me and at least said "Oooops sorry, we ran out of copies of the Pro Upgrade, and are making more." Instead, I get the wild goose chase... they tell me to contact my local reseller who is handling my account. I contact my reseller (who has already debited my bank account for the purchase) and they say that it's SuSE's fault... that the product has not been shipped to them yet, and if I want more information, I should contact SuSE The real clincher is that this copy is supposed to be used in a pilot run where I work... the IT guys are finally letting us trial Linux at work as a replacement for Windows. Every day that goes by makes it that much harder to convince the IT guys that SuSE is a good choice for a Linux distribution...... Sigh C.

Well at least I am not alone (relief), I had contacted SuSE Germany regarding my subscription and I was told it has already left the warehouse and should be arriving to my address in Stuttgart. ( that was the same story I was told for 7.1 upgrade. It ended with being UPS'ed to Turkey after a month of the relase date) So the reality is it has not arrived yet and my envy is getting bigger and bigger and it looks like another UPS will end up -- Togan Muftuoglu

I placed my order online, but didn't receive an email confirmation. When I called they said this is weird, we have payment record but we don't have an order record --- good thing you called. "icks!" I ordered 7.2 about three weeks ago, I didn't get the email confirmation until a week after I had ordered it. My best advice is to try and a find a copy of it at a computer store that sells 7.2 off the shelf, but to get the upgrade version of it you will probably have to buy it through Suse. [snip] Starting with SuSE 7.2, the upgrade is clearly marked with a "big red stamp" "UPDATE". It's a seperate package ( which I have never seen before :) and my local store had lots in store. It shouldn't be too hard for stores to have both on shelf, and require to see f.ex. the beginners guide as proof of purchase on a previous version ( the updates don't include the beginners guide ) -tosi

Then you are fortunate, because I haven't seen any upgrades for any of the distributions in the stores around here (Northern Virginia/DC area). They only offer the full packages. -tosi Tosi: Interesting I have not seen the update/upgrade being sold in stores. I got my copy from CompUSA in Long Beach, CA. Made them go to receiveing dock to get my copy. Your problem is exactly the one I had, but I really do not know what else could have changed that. BTW I have found out that kword just crashes now if I try a Word 6.0 document, but it has no problem if I got Office97 doc files. Is this normal? Tazio

I remembering reading an article where Kword / Koffice (the names will probably soon change because of legal implications around Killustrator) agreed to use the same MSWord filters to speed development. Try installing the package 'wv', available on CD one on 7.2. 'wv' is a package that converts wv to all kinds of different formats including HTML and PDF. Maybe this is the key. -- noodlez: Karol Pietrzak PGP KeyID: 0x3A1446A0
