Hello again! I think that did it! Now for a follow-up question. Using the two commands you recommended, I got the following results: 1. elfenix:~ > cat /var/log/boot.msg | grep -i shm Mount SHM FS on /dev/shm done So the shmfs has been mounted. Good. But.... 2. elfenix:~ > cat /etc/mtab | grep -i shm elfenix:~ > No entry in /etc/mtab. Before I commented out those lines, I _did_ have an entry there. (Forgot to write it down.) Is this device not supposed to be in mtab? So far, the machine acts pretty normal and the ziptool command is suddenly working again. Thanks again for your help. Steve
Yes, that should do it. That makes our scripts identical, and on my machine, it boots fine. You can check whether it boots by checking your /etc/mtab:
cat /etc/mtab | grep -i shm
... or check the boot.msg
cat /var/log/boot.msg | grep -i shm -- noodlez: Karol Pietrzak PGP KeyID: 0x3A1446A0

Oh, good. That means it should be mounted...
So the shmfs has been mounted. Good. But....
2. elfenix:~ > cat /etc/mtab | grep -i shm elfenix:~ >
damn, that means it's not mounted since /etc/mtab lists all mounted devices.
No entry in /etc/mtab. Before I commented out those lines, I _did_ have an entry there. (Forgot to write it down.) Is this device not supposed to be in mtab?
That's definitely weird. If /var/log/boot.msg doesn't list starting SHM, it's in /etc/mtab but ziptool complains that it doesn't exist... On the other hand, if /var/log/boot.msg lists SHM, it's not in /etc/mtab but it exists because ziptool works.
So far, the machine acts pretty normal and the ziptool command is suddenly working again.
If you want to "straighten things out", you can also tell it to mount manually. Remove the pertaining lines in /etc/rc.d/boot and copy the shm lines from mtab into fstab: cat /etc/mtab | grep -i shm >> /etc/fstab Make sure you have the double-brackets (>>) because only one (>) will overwrite /etc/fstab.
Thanks again for your help.

Not necessarily. /proc/mtab is a file maintained by mount/umount. You can for example do mount -n, so the mount won't be logged into /etc/mtab. There can also be problems writing to the file, while the mount is successful anyway. The only reliable source of information is /proc/mounts Regards Anders
hi you all, you can not mount the shm to anywhere. it is mounted as soon as you start your linux box. it is a directory, /dev/shm ! you can copy files there and so on. if you need it somewhere else than /dev/shm just do a "ln -s /dev/shm /<where-you-want-it>" greets, chris Am Samstag, 7.
