The link I posted contains the instructions for Windows too. It appears that is where "imagewriter" comes in. Exactly what I had in mind when I asked the question. I think that everyone had assumed that just because the OP mentioned that he was using Ubuntu that he didn't need any further advice apart from where to get the Live discs. The thing is, with the openSUSE image you only need to download it and copy to the raw device (which is different from a file copy with a file browser, that doesn't work). On some other distributions you need to prepare the image first to make it bootable on an usb stick: the opensue image comes already prepared, and works directly, as is, both on DVD media or usb stick. This does not work: cp image.iso /media/usb:stick This works (copy to raw device): cp image.iso /dev/sdX where 'X' has to be replaced with the correct letter. And beware, the incorrect letter will destroy whatever is there. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.3 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

CDs and USB sticks are quite different types of media. CDs and DVDs come in many different versions, and require a special device for reading and writing. In comparison, the USB stick is, to Linux, just a plain read/write media. Hence, no special process needed for writing to a USB stick.
Now that I have read the URL you give above, I will create a bootable USB using 'imagewriter'.
I don't know what that does, but 'dd' or 'cp' will suffice. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (16.4°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - dedicated server rental in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

same as dd, but GUI. It's (a bit) easier to find the pen device (by size) on some other distro, there is an other utility that fiddle with the boot system, but openSUSE iso are hybrid ones and don't need it jdd -- http://dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It is a GUI that facilitates finding the correct destination of the copy. Nevertheless, people have been known to make the mistake. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.3 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)
