Connecting to a Windows XP computer
Okay, here's the situation The computer in the other room has its My Documents folder shared (//POMMYMOMMY/My Documents). It's running Windows XP. How do I connect to that folder on my Linux machine. Do I need to set up a network on the XP machine or what?

If you have the Samba Client installed and the two machines are in communication, you should be able to see My Documents if you issue the command smbclient -NL POMMYMOMMY In order to access it, you'll need to do the following (as root) chmod +s $(which smbmnt) chmod +s $(which smbumount) so that you can access the mount/unmount utilities as an ordinary user. Then do: smbmount //POMMYMOMMY/My\ Documents mnt where mnt is an available directory. If it asks you for a password, just hit Enter (unless you really need a password). Then you can get at My Documents through mnt. To unmount, do the obvious: smbumount mnt good luck Paul

Hmm. I wonder if someone could provide insight as to where I'm going wrong. Though not a huge deal, I'm still completely unable to connect my Win2K system with my laptop (10.0). My wife's Win2k system is "lilly" on workgroup, WORKGROUP. Here's what I got from the above: kai@yoda:~> smbclient -NL lilly Connection to lilly failed kai@yoda:~> smbclient -NL 192.168.0.100 timeout connecting to 192.168.0.100:445 timeout connecting to 192.168.0.100:139 Error connecting to 192.168.0.100 (Operation already in progress) Connection to 192.168.0.100 failed Oddly enough, I can connect to my laptop from the Win2K system. So the SMB client is working fine. In addition, I have no problem getting shares working on my NT-based network at work. Could this be due to a firewall or other security setting? Maybe the Win2K systems need to be configured to accept uninvited outside connections? - Carl

That would be server, not client, when connecting -to- your laptop. Check for any firewall running on the w2k machine. You'll also get errors if you have nothing shared on the w2k machine, I think.

You can also do "smb:///POMMYMOMMY/My\ Documents" in Konqueror. This will enable you to use the folder as if it was local. -- /Rikard ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- email : rikard.j@rikjoh.com web : http://www.rikjoh.com mob : +46 (0)736 19 76 25 ------------------------ Public PGP fingerprint ---------------------------- < 15 28 DF 78 67 98 B2 16 1F D3 FD C5 59 D4 B6 78 46 1C EE 56 >

I found out that there are some problems with SuSE's firewall, which prevent SuSE clients to browse very well windows networks (mostly XP). What I found out to be easiest way to access them, was just to know the IP name of the machine, and then from konqueror: smb:/serverip/sharename It will ask you for user/pass if you did not set it up beforehand in YaST. Not as convenient, but works for me. Cheers -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny)
