[opensuse] Sound | Skype
I have never used any sound input devices, now I find that things are greyed out for inputs on my sound card. Yast lists it as MCP51 High Def Audio Hardware info lists driver as snd_hda_intel , Vendor Nvidia. System is a Dell Dimension C521, Athalon64x2, 6g ram, os11.3-64. I installed Skype and it seems to be working if I could get my mic to function, get audio from the other end. On the other hand, is there some functional sound fob I could use??? Thanks, Mike.. --- Sent from my SuseLinux Desktop. --- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It is probably sound Capture control to get sound out. *If* it is not listed in default mixer window, check: Settings >> Configure channels Window that will pop up will give you list of all channel controls that you can add to mixer window. For input it should be PCM, but if there is no output you can check other channels.
On the other hand, is there some functional sound fob I could use???

Ok, Thanks, that did the trick, had to drag/drop stuff across and get it setup. Now to figure out why the input is so hot. Mike. --- Sent from my Suse Linux Desktop. --- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ok, The audio from the mic is at a very high level. I have as controls "Capture" & "Mux", with both of these at the min setting the audio still is over driven. The headset is a basic type, no mic amp. My input options are, Mic, Front Mic, Line and am using the Front Mic. That is my biggest problem, I do get the menu with other items I can drag over and adjust, but there is no Mic gain switch there. I thought an update to alsa might fix that but it was no help. I also looked at amixer, alsamixer. I was trying to use Mic*(whatever) and that is not used by Skype. When you give a lot of gain then the other side can hear you, but voice is distorted, so they have trouble to understand you. I disabled microphones when I found out that they are not used. Skype is using Capture and if it is enabled (in Skype Options) then it can adjust level automatically. For me that worked fine, although it is funny to see Capture slider going up and down when I turn head away from microphone. In KDE 4.5.4 there is check box under the Capture slider used to enable and disable Capture, in older versions it can be led symbol. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ok, I have seen this happen in Skype while trying to get it setup. What you describe is exactly what is going on. What do I do for inputs in Kmix, do I need kmix? Going to try some more things.. I just lowered the slider. When it is at the bottom there is no boost.

With the 'Capture' at min setting the audio is still overdriven, thats why I am looking for the 'boost', etc. It looks like I have an oddball mixer that may not be fully supported, it's not a new computer Dell Dimension C521. I have Mic boost as a slider with 4 levels (this depends on audio hardware). You should look into Mixer >> Settings >> Configure channels . It must be somewhere. It is also possible that card (chip) is not recognized properly, so it keeps mic boost on and there is no control over it.
Tnx, Mike.

I think that is the problem, I do have an older SB pci card I could put in, bu I am afraid it will just cause more problems. Thanks for you help/suggestions.
