Ok, The audio from the mic is at a very high level. I have as controls "Capture" & "Mux", with both of these at the min setting the audio still is over driven. The headset is a basic type, no mic amp.
My input options are, Mic, Front Mic, Line and am using the Front Mic.
I was trying to use Mic*(whatever) and that is not used by Skype.
When you give a lot of gain then the other side can hear you, but voice is distorted, so they have trouble to understand you. I disabled microphones when I found out that they are not used.
Skype is using Capture and if it is enabled (in Skype Options) then it can adjust level automatically. For me that worked fine, although it is funny to see Capture slider going up and down when I turn head away from microphone.
In KDE 4.5.4 there is check box under the Capture slider used to enable and disable Capture, in older versions it can be led symbol.

Ok, I have seen this happen in Skype while trying to get it setup. What you describe is exactly what is going on. What do I do for inputs in Kmix, do I need kmix? Going to try some more things..
