Today, I tried to install SuSE 7.0 on a PC belonging to a friend of mine. It was aCompac Pressario with a 233 MHz processor. All hardware modules were the original cards mounted by Compac.
Setup failed to install the PS2 mouse correctly, the internal modem couldn't be detected (tried Yast2 yast1 and KPPP). The sound chip was unknown.
As far as I know the modem is a Soft (win) modem and cannot be used in Linux. My mother has a Compaq and I am going to be removing Windows first. Trying to get her to get an ISDN TA :) Sean -- GNUPG ID 92B9D0CF | Fidonet: 2:263/950 ICQ: 679813 | Homepage: http://www.tcob1.net Linux User: #124682 | My Current Uptime is 0d, 23h and 30m on Linux 2.2.17 ...What's a new brides' wedding night dread? I believe Compaqs are the worst computer ever made. Their engineers must be highschool level graduates because some of the hardware designs and component selections are the most awkward and useless I've ever seen. Ever try to do repairs on a Compaq, they are ridiculous to work on.
I would disagree, for a while they were the best PC's in my view. But they were very expensive, and they used a lot of Compaq specific harware..even as far as mounting brackets for FD's I recall. So they were also the most eccentric. Personally I think the old ones are rather beutifully made. The new ones are just like the others... p.s. I had no problems getting Linux running on a Compaq 486 with 8Mb memory, and a very helpful email reply from Compaq concerning memory that could be used in it. Cliff
