[SLE] Dual head rears its Ugly head again...
Okay I had a similar issue when going from Suse 9.3 to 10.0. The xorg.conf I had would no longer work for my dual head setup. Eventually I worked it out, but it was a major pain in the butt. Here I am again, with the same issue. This time I am feeling less optimistic, but am wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I have a Compaq evo 610c notebook with a radeon mobility 7500 in it. At work I am using a docking station. Its got both DVI out and regular 15 pin. I had the setup working with the below xorg.conf for the 15 pin. I couldn't get DVI to work with it, so I would guess it still does not work. But no matter what I have tried all I can get is the external monitor to come as a clone of the first instead of the MergedFB extra desktop space I had before. The attached xorg.conf was really a hack on my part but it got it to work. Which was really all I cared about. If anyone has any suggestions or can point to a working example, hopefully using the radeon drivers, I would be most grateful. On a side note, with my desktop. I've been using XGL there , and to get better compatibility I have gone to using Gnome. For some reason if I save my session with Gnome, and then log out and try logging in, it just hangs. I have to go in and clear out the saved session information and then it works again. Very annoying... And I have cut it down to just saving the session (nothing extra running) and it still does it... Rajko, reading the bugfix it looks good. When I get into work I will check apply the rpm and check it out. Thanks a TON! Yes I tried changing from the MergedFB to xinerama, the best I could get was a clone of the desktop, even if its just a partial clone of a "full desktop". I will let you know if this works. Unfortunately it does not look like the updated RPM resolved it. In fact it looks like it removed some of the options for my Radeon card. I no longer can turn off MergedFB and mess with the Xinerama stuff directly as it does not give me that option in Sax2 to do anything with xinerama. Maybe the specs for a radeon Mobility 7500 were changed in a database with the updated RPM? Do you happen to have a copy of your Xorg.conf you got working that I could hack around with? I am also going to try Orn's suggestion. I suggested to check Xorg.0.log to see if the same error appears in your log. In bug report you can see details including xorg.conf. I didn't changed it except for enabled xinerama that was disabled by sax2, but please note that this was special case with 2 separate cards, I still don't use video out on nVidia card (nothing close computer to connect to). Here is what I have collected. Few tips: http://en.opensuse.org/Laptops_and_external_VGA Than mailing list suse-laptop@suse.com (mostly german language) article (in german) 200605101901.18271@tux.boltz.de.vu You can use google search that will return this aricle. You can look search results for ati radeon 7500 on freedesktop (X.org is part of it) https://bugs.freedesktop.org/buglist.cgi?query_format=specific&order= relevance+desc&bug_status=__open__&product=&content=ati+radeon+7500 (above two lines is only one line url; use copy and paste to transfer url in a browser) and the same on http://bugzilla.novell.com You may try to set manually 2 Monitor sections for each monitor one. I have seen configurations where is everything duplicated, Monitor and Card sections. It should not be necessary, but it doesn't hurt to try. If nothing helps please attach Xorg.0.log and xorg.conf if it is different from previously posted. or file bug report on http://bugzilla.novell.com -- Regards, Rajko. -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Below are the parts in my own xorg.conf that are relevant. The point is, you need to have two devices. The nVidia card has an option "UseDisplayDevice" or "ConnectedMonitor" ... where you can decide which connection applies. The option names on your Radeon will wary, but there should be options giving similar functionality. Then in the server layout section, you make the independent screen setup. Hope that helps. ... I think I tried that back on 10.0 in trying to get it to work, and instead came upon the MergedFB to resolve it. Which resulted in the xorg.conf I posted. But if Rajko's pointer to the bugfix rpm does not work, I will give this a shot as well. Having more screen real estate is always good, it stinks going back down. Thanks!
