Sorry for the size but I have attached /etc/X11/XF86Config /var/log/Sax.log
As for ` /var/log/XFree86.0.log ` it is over 24k and reports no errors
Sax fails when I choose to enable 3D support
OTOH, 3Ddiag reports I need to include : `Load "GLX" ` and specify ` "nvidia" ` as the driver.
If I do this manually, X still fails to start.

Weird problem, have you ever had it working before (other distro, older driver)? Maybe you could try an older driver from the NVidia ftp site. You should also try mailing NVidia about the problem. Op zondag 25 augustus 2002 18:31, schreef suse:

TTry the attched XF86Config file. Works like a charm. Sax2 has issues w/ NVidia crads

I downloaded and installed the latest SuSE specific drivers from NVIDIA (1.0-3123). with no improvement I then installed the tar.gz versions and ran switch2nvidia then switch2nvidia_glx. switch2nvidia_glx failed complaining about the NVIDIA_kernel package and suggesting a re-install. I did this for both NVIDIA_kernel.*.rpm and NVIDIA_GLX.*.rpm As root (not su) I then ran "startx -- -logverbose 5 -verbose 5" intending to capture further error messages. Imagine my surprise when KDE started successfully! :) Preliminary investigation shows that the tar.gz version of the GLX package contains X11 library files which were not in the SuSE versions of the binary rpms. Am I right? Should I forward this message to anyone else? Now that I have working 3D - evidenced by superfast "gears" can someone tell me the usual command to collect GL performance stats? Thanks to all who contributed - THIS LIST RULES! :) -- Twist it, stomp it, bounce it, shake it 'Cos you know the vibe is what you make it
I've had the same issues lately with 8.0 and the newest nVidia drivers. 4 of my co-workers machines just puke on these binary only drivers. I walked into work on Thursday when to startx and behold...*death*. X wouldn't start..I hadn't changed anything accept that I notices when I did apt-get upgrade I got a new xf86tools pkgs. I reverted to the older pkg and it still puked. At this point I've said screw nVidia both at home and at work. I went out and bought an ATI Radeon 7500 for work because it's preformed so well at home. Brought it back to work..and 10 minutes later..DRI+GLX worked at a res of 1600X1200..*sweet* :) There is something cockeyed with the new driver and SuSE's X updates. * Z_God (zeldario@wanadoo.nl) [020825 03:10]: ::Are you sure you have the driver from NVidia installed? ::If not, you can install it with YOU. :: ::Op zondag 25 augustus 2002 10:24, schreef suse: ::> Subject: NVidia +Sax2 +GLX - Cannot enable 3D ::> Date: Sun, 25 Aug 2002 00:18:17 +0100 ::> From: SuSE <suse@syrene.fsnet.co.uk> ::> To: "suse-linux-e@suse.com" <suse-linux-e@suse.com> ::> ::> Sorry for the size but I have attached ::> /etc/X11/XF86Config ::> /var/log/Sax.log ::> ::> As for ` /var/log/XFree86.0.log ` it is over 24k and reports no errors ::> ::> Sax fails when I choose to enable 3D support ::> ::> OTOH, 3Ddiag reports I need to include : ::> `Load "GLX" ` ::> and specify ` "nvidia" ` as the driver. ::> ::> If I do this manually, X still fails to start. :: :: ::-- ::Check the headers for your unsubscription address ::For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com ::Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com ::Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com :: -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. Interesting. I'm considering trying a Radeon 7500 now, because getting the nVidia drivers installed is a nightmare. How do you change the video card - just run SaX2? Kevin

I then just ran sax2 and it pretty much just setup everything for me. You have to make sure that the XFree86 GLX and DRI pkgs are there but this is pretty simple. Hi Ben, It just so happens I have a 7500 being sent out to me by a friend who doesn't use it anymore....so out of curiosity do you play any Q3,UT or such? If so do you have an opinion on there performance with that card? Following this thread has made me very anxious to get that card in my grubby hands ;) Cheers On Sun, 2002-08-25 at 13:54, Ben Rosenberg wrote:

Thanks for the heads up Ben, I'm very anxious for this card now as I have a tnt2 ultrat at the moment as well. Looks like you play alot of the same dern games I do...perhaps some dm is in order? ;) Well I had better wait until I get a decent connection back b4 I ask about that stuff lol. If you go with a Radeon and its drivers do you "taint the kernel" so to speak ? - as is the case with Nvidia. Brian Marr On Monday 26 August 2002 07:51, Mark Doucette wrote:
