[opensuse] Can't Build Search Index in KDE Help Center
Using SuSE 10.3 the Build Search Index - KDE Help Center panel lists indices for all documents as missing. Click on Build Index does not work, the status remains missing for all selected documents. Searching for 'bluetooth' for instance gives garbage like khc_htsearch.pl --indexdir=/home/robert/.kde/share/apps/khelpcenter/index/ --config=book_opensuse_startupen --words=bluetooth --method=and --maxnum=5 --lang=en Robert -- http://rwbest.no.sapo.pt/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Robert, Seems the Help center needs a prog called "htdig" to build the index (if you click "details" tab when building it says something like "htdig failed" i remember). If that is your case, try installing htdig and build index again. HTH, David -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I wonder why htdig is not included in the SuSE 10.3 distro. I had to add SuSE 10.2 as software repo. Also wine is missing in SuSE 10.3 - why? It's essential! Hi Robert, I have both htdig and wine in the 10.3 oss repo (htdig has an update in the update repo too). Perhaps double check your setup? I'm using download.opensuse.org, as provided by the yast "Community Repositories" function. Hello, I use DVDs that go with Linux Magazine, SuSE 10.2 and 10.3 with issues 75 and 85. YaST can't find htdig or wine in SuSE 10.3. I had bad experience with opensuse.org repo, YaST takes ages to start. Maybe you enjoy very fast Internet connection? I live in a rural area in Portugal - the weather is much better here! Yes, I agree that using repositories with anything less than an ADSL connection, is a real PITA. However... instead of using the download.opensuse.org redirector, you can use another repo that works faster for you. I think I remember reading about one on a portuguese usinversity, perhaps: http://en.opensuse.org/Mirrors_Released_Version#Portugal You will have to browse a bit to find where is the corresponding update directory for those mirrors. Or, you could buy the boxed edition: two double layer DVDs, they contain more. Or mirror into an external usb drive the entire oss / non oss repos from an internet cafe... - -- Cheers, Carlos E. This was true for 10.2 but the repository handling in 10.3 was improved a lot!

Or, you can use the "Software Search"[0] and then the "1-Click Install"[1] for 10.3. In this case, no additional repository needs to be added permanently. Doing so, there is no delay for "everydays" work with YaST. Yes, that's true, but you just pick out your old modem from the cupboard, and try updating anything using the modem. Then we talk. Now add to the equation a metered connection, pay per minute. Add bad, long, rural lines. Some rural places use a cellular fixed telephone, meaning even lower bandwidth. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. But this problem is completely independent of the time starting YaST takes! The main repository changes seldomly, see http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.3/repo/oss/suse/repodata/ It has been never changed since the release of 10.3. Thus, there is no strong need to activate the automatic refresh in YaST for such a repository. Consequently, there will not take place any data transfer when starting YaST, AFAIK. BTW: IIRC, Robert never talked about "slow updates" but had problems after adding the main repository in the past. Thus, the new subject is somewhat misleading, IMHO. Jan -- Do not tell big lies. Maybe... I didn't think of that. However... when you are about to start the software management module you need to start the network too, even if it's only to find updates to packages in the dvd. The user doesn't know at what point is the network going to be needed, so the network (ie, the modem) would be started at the start - or on demand, if so configured. And if you configure a repo like packman, things get much worse.

I enjoy ADSL since last year, but it's slow for USA servers. For Portugal it can do 100 KB/s ~ 1Mb/s.

Good advice! I added openSUSE-10.3-FTP 10.3 /pub/opensuse/distribution/10.3/repo/oss/ on cesium.di.uminho.pt (Braga univ) and it works fine. Robert -- http://rwbest.no.sapo.pt/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Based on the issue numbers, I am assuming that you are referring to the European version of Linux Magazine. There is one in the US with the same name, but is published by someone else. The European version is published in the US as Linux Magazine Pro. Do you subscribe or buy it off the rack? Just curious. Funny - I find just the opposite. There are tons of articles in LM that I read and learn from while LJ contains mostly system admin stuff I could care less about.
