Hi all, During the installation of 8.2 onto my vaio pgc-f801a, the firewire port was found and configured automatically. During the end-of-install reboot, when the firewire port was being opened by the hotplug service the laptop froze. It required a hard reset and safe boot to be able to get my laptop working, so I turned off firewire in YAST and haven't had any problems since. Is this just a vaio problem, or is there a problem with the hotplug service in 8.2? If it's fixable, how would I? (I'd rather have a nice working port) Have Fun, Jim -- James McBoyle james.mcboyle.cp.net "...the Goddess could not spend all Her time persuading the Kings and Queens of the world of the idiocy of war. Not a great deal of help, perhaps, but certainly SuSE 8.2 seems to have set up my two (don't ask) firewire cards perfectly and without manual intervention. With 8.1 I had to meddle with a setting or two, but it was easy - so I don't think there is a generic problem with firewire hotplugging, my devices are working fine. Hope you can get the vaio sorted, HTH Fergus
Have Fun, Jim

I have a firewire card on my desktop box and it was recognized/configured automatically and I can even connect my digital camcorder to it and transfer movie to HDD whitout any problems. Probably you should check what kind of chip do you have on the firewire card and if this is usable under SuSE/linux.

You could try this test kernel: ftp.suse.com/pub/people/olh/kernel/usbtest/ It has the latest firewire driver from www.linux1394.org. Maybe something like acpi=off or =oldboot helps with the original 8.2 kernel. Gruss olaf -- USB is for mice, FireWire is for men!
