I used mySQL awhile ago, just learning abit about DBI/SQL and it was nice. You do have to buy it, if you use it for commerical usage, but personal non-profit, non-commerical use should be free. I downloaded it free of their site and I think it comes with SuSE 6.3. There is also one called mSQL (miniSQL??) that is supose to be a GPL database for Unix. I dare you to type "SQL" into http://www.freshmeat.net : ) Jack -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

MySQL ( www.mysql.org ) would be my suggestion. If you going to Linux I
think MySQL is probally the most widely used. If you wanted to make you
databes accessable via the web check into PHP ( www.php.net ) it's
compariable to Cold Fusion for NT. MySQL and PHP work great together!!
MySQL is also pretty easy to install. They have it in .rpm and tar.gz
format. I would recomend using the .tar.gz though.

MySQL is command line tool. Put there are some pretty slick GUI interfaces
for it. There is a web interface called Webmin (have to download the MySQL
module for it you can get all of that from www.webmin.com ). That one can
pretty much do everything.
There are also a couple for graphical interfaces for KDE. I think the best
one is Kmysql.
Good Luck

I downloaded MySQL the other day but at first glance it didn't seem to have any kinda of GUI interface I could use for designing the file layout, which kinda put me off.
Hmm freshmeat.. now that'd be interesting:)

Hi,
Can anyone recommend a Database supporting basic SQL for use on Linux ?
Interbase (www.interbase.com). It is a fully featured RDBMS (Transactions, Triggers Stored procedures, etc. etc.). Version 4 is free, Version 6 is Open Source, beta is available on web site. I use it instead of Oracle for small to medium database (< 250 Users. < 200GB). JDBC, DBI, PHP, Peal, ODBC, Native API interfaces. It is multi platform (Linux, Windows, Solaris, Novell, AIX, OpenVMS etc. etc.) and you don't have to change you database files for different platforms, develop on one, deploy on another. PostgreSQL- very good: transaction tracking, objects, inheritance, free. Even has a tcl app that mimicks Access in many ways called pgaccess. MySQL - light footprint, NO transaction tracking, limited indexing, no foreign keys, free. InterBase, from Borland, commerical SQL engine which has all the goodies. You can download a fully functional version which has an expiration date on it. Perseat licenses are cheap, relative to M$ JLK __ _ / / (_)__ __ ____ __ * Powerful * Flexible * Compatible * Reliable * / /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / *Well Supported * Thousands of New Users Every Day* /____/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ The Cost Effective Choice - Linux Means Business! -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
