Gil, That shouldn't be necessary. Tell me a little more about your arrangement there. How are you communicating on-line and troubleshooting? Are you leaving the card installed and just switching bios settings? If so, that's good. If you're shutting down from troubleshooting and reconfiguring things to go on-line for e-mails, that's unnecessary and too much work. How have you set yourself up? - Carl

Gil,

No, I do not leave the card installed and switch BIOS settings. Here's the routine I've been following. If using the on-board chip the PCI video card is NOT in the machine. When I go to use the PCI card I first restart the pooter and go into the BIOS and change the BIOS from on-board to PCI. Then I shut down the pooter, install the PCI video card, and restart the pooter. When I decide to go back to the on-board I restart the pooter, go into the BIOS, and change it from PCI to on-board. Then I shut down the pooter, remove the PCI video card, restart the pooter. This is a huge pain in the butt! :o)
If so, that's good. If you're shutting down from troubleshooting and reconfiguring things to go on-line for e-mails, that's unnecessary and too much work. How have you set yourself up?
I then print out a bunch of the e-mails that you, Stan, and Lee have been kind enough to send. I try out the suggestions that I understand :o) and then report back to you via the list. I was about to try the various commands that you guys have sent (e.g., 3 apm=off acpi=noirq noapic). Gil

When you have the PCI card plugged in, and you've selected it in the BIOS by turning off the on-board graphics, can you then boot into run level 3 OK? I'm assuming you can, cause that's how you're able to try the various SaX2 commands. I just want to be certain... when you've tapped the "3" key at the boot menu while SuSE 9.3 Professional is highlighted, after you do that, you can get into run level 3 OK? - Carl

Yes.

Yes. Then after the screen scrolls many lines of text it asks me to log in. I log in (as user) and then I try to run sax2 -l or sax2 -r. Of course it asks me for the root password. I enter that and then it tries to run (unsuccesfully) sax2. It displays that same error message (re: abort) I've described so many times. I then have to do ctrl/alt/delete to reboot the machine. If instead I enter startx it gives me a "Fatal Error" message and I have to power-down the pooter and start over. Gil

Well, you should log in as root on another console (in run level 3, you've got six... Ctl+Alt+F1 through Ctl+Alt+F6 will step you through the consoles. You'll know you're in a new console when you see the login prompt again. This lets you log in as "Gil" on console 1 and maybe as "root" on console 2, and so on... We're going to try to get you on-line and chatting in run level 3, in text mode, with the PCI card installed and BIOS set to use it. Once we get that done, we can do some other things besides the SaX2 commands. Are you up for that? Do you have time? - Carl

Time, yes. Capabilities? Not at the moment. I do not have any of the chat programs installed and configured on this computer. More to the point, however, is that I have never used a chat program and have no working knowledge of how to use one. Gil

If you have Mozilla installed without the standard included Chatzilla, shame on your installer, as if you were reading this in Mozilla Mail you would need no more than click this: irc://freenode/suse . If you do have Mozilla with Chatzilla but aren't using Mozilla Mail to read this, you can paste the URL in to Mozilla's urlbar to open CZ directly into the Freenode SuSE chatroom. If your Mozilla is missing CZ, load this to quickly install the small Chatzilla extension: http://www.hacksrus.com/~ginda/chatzilla/xpi/chatzilla-0.9.68.5.xpi You may need to save to disk first, and you may need to do it as root. You also have the option to use Firefox to load the exact same Chatzilla extension. As it opens, you'll want to choose some appropriate nickname to use instead of IRCMonkey. Other than that, just type to say something, and read what you or anyone else has to say in virtual real time. Hi Felix... Hi Gil, It's 9:06 EDT here and I've just started getting list mail again after having to change servers. Felix, FYI, we were just hypothesizing about getting Gil on a command line IM client (micq) in run level 3, so we could help troubleshoot his graphics/X problem in real time. Right now, he's switching gear and rebooting to get and print e-mails, then shutting down, switching gear and troubleshooting. Very time consuming. - Carl

Carl and Felix, I just installed Chatzilla into my Mozilla Firefox (thanks, Felix). I still don't know how to use it, but it appears as if it is connecting. :o) Still the problem that I only have the one pooter, so I can't be online with anyone and also rebooting the pooter over and over again to test various commands. I now have to learn how to use Chatzilla. Thx Gil

Gil, this is downright silly. 1. Run level 3 is still multiuser and networked; the only things missing are X and your mouse. Before GUIs, your only choice was text based command line mode. People thrived on it. You can too... at least until your X config is fixed for the new card. Give it a chance... 2. If you take the route I've been suggesting, i.e. leaving the new card installed and staying in run level 3 to troubleshoot, you can quit booting and booting and booting... ya know, one of these times your on/off switch or the power supply or /something/ is going to give up and say "I've had enough! No more booting!" and *then* where will you be? Hmmm? :-) 3. We can Instant Message with you *in real time* using "micq", which you might even have already installed. If you're really concerned about learning how to use it, just stick with your on-board graphics for now, open up a shell ("terminal") from the comfort of your desktop, type "micq" and you can learn how to run it from there. Then, when you're comfortable Instant Messaging from the command line, we can pick up where we left off, only this time you can troubleshoot in run level 3 *and* at the same time communicate with us. Read the 'readme' and 'faq' installed at /usr/share/doc/packages/micq You can navigate there using Konqueror. Note: There's a URI there for the developer's website and more complete documentation is available there. - Carl

I forgot to add this: You can just go to http://www.icq.com/ in your browser (Firefox?) and use the online registration process there to get an ICQ number. - Carl

Chatzilla is purely IRC, and so can't be used for "IM" like ICQ or AOLIM. Once onto irc://freenode/suse with Chatzilla you can catch my attention using either: /query nick (some message) or /msg nick message or nick: (some message) Either of the former will open a private tab between you and I, though /msg won't open the tab until I give a response. All will cause my PC speaker to beep, and CZ to change the appropriate tabs color to red to indicate someone wants me. ATM, I'm on with 2 machines using nicks MrMazda & a-865. So, 1-open CZ with URL above in Firefox urlbar 2-type in input box '/msg MrMazda hey it's me Gil. Now what?' 3-Wait for me to notice, assuming I'm awake. :-p -- "Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?" Matthew 6:27 NIV Team OS/2 ** Reg. Thanks for this explanation, Felix. Perhaps later on today I can try this out? :o) Gil
SuSE 9.3 professional Control center/yast 2 modules/software/install and remove software/administrator mode/<password> Then select "search" from the "filter" drop down box and try to enter something. The cursor appears in this box but more than 9 out of 10 times I cannot enter anything into the box. No letters appear when I type and, of course, this means the search function doesn't work. So I can't easily locate things to add or remove software from the DVD. Yes, I can do a round-about search by instead clicking "package groups" in the "filter" box and then scrolling to the bottom and highlighting "zzz All." But that's kind of a pain, and beside, the search function should work 100% of the time, not less than 10%. Any ideas why it is so flaky? Is there a key to getting the search box to accept key strokes every time? Thanks, gurus! :o) Gil and Judith
OK, I now have Chatzilla installed and I read the intro section at http://irchelp.org/ Ugh.... I hate manuals and instructional pages. They're written by people who clearly understand the subject matter but who don't seem to have any ability to convey that knowledge in clear, simple to understand sentences. :o( I learn much better by doing rather than reading and trying to decipher "geek-talk." If I only have this computer to work from is there anything we can do via chat to facilitate finding a solution to my video problems? Or are we limited to e-mail communications? Thx! Gil
Just so everyone directly involved in this thread is aware, especially you Gil, the server handling my site, 'comet', died a sudden death this morning and hasn't been resuscitated... yet! The intermittent problems you saw yesterday and wrote me about were a warning. I've moved to a new server and everything's up and running again, excepting the usual dns propagation delay. If you want to communicate, I'm back on Skype, YIM, AIM and ICQ and will be for the rest of the evening. regards, - Carl
