Re: [opensuse] Media play performance issue with OpenSUSE 10.3
----- "Ying Shi"
Hi, all:
I have used suse for several days now. I am a home user, frequently watching movies and online video clips. I also have Windows XP in my PC.
One of the less intuitive things that can impact the quality of video playback is having the desktop effects enabled. If you have compositing enabled in your xorg.conf and are running compiz you are very likely to notice problems with video playback. The issue is well enough known that someone actualy built a KDE 4 plasmoid called "Toggle-Compositing" to help. Description on kde-look.org is as follows: "Toggle-Compositing is a little button that you can conveniently put anywhere in your plasma panel or desktop and it allows you to switch with ease, beetween KWin's compositing and traditional mode." -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Thank you all.
I remember I see the word 'beagle' somewhere so it must be enabled in
my system. Also, I will disable desktop 3D effect.

Ah yes, I didn't even address his choice of media player - I don't have any serious trust issues per se with real, but I do find that realplayer is far from the optimal media player - I prefer mplayer, xine and their derivatives, all available from packman. With VLC and mplayer, any video can be seen, or need editing :-)) jdd -- Jean-Daniel Dodin Président du CULTe www.culte.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

In my experience it does a better job of playing (and ripping tracks from) Sony's purposefully corrupted DVDs. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

mplayer does equally well theses days with the newer Sony DVDs. However, you will need the svn version of mplayer linked against the svn version of dvdnav from the mplayer site. I am not too sure if Packman have caught up yet. Charles

I used to use Fedora 8 and the mplayer builds from livna, atrpms, and freshrpms.net all were configured as you suggest. In that case it was a simple matter of specifying dvdnav://x instead of dvd://x to play the Sony DVDs. Sadly the Packman mplayer RPMs specifically (according to the change log) disabled the use of dvdnav. I have simply found it easier to use vlc to play them than to grab the svn and build myself (lazy ;-) ). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Interesting, I have to go through the CHANGELOG to see why they disabled it. I know that the dvdnav included in all distros are too ancient for recent mplayer to use, but they could have prokaged a SVN version from the mplayer site.

It is easy once you have done it once and set up a script. ;-) Charles

it's just a couple of rows that I explained in an idiot-proof dvdnav-howto.txt. Even menu navigation works, now I only have to fix the audio track selection in the menu -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I know, Nico- I am on the mplayer/mencoder lists ;-). BTW, great job with the dvdnav improvements. Charles
