[opensuse] Using 32 bit apps on 64bit 10.3
I have had one or two problems with 64bit apps and updates. The update seems to insist on using 64bit even when there isn't one available and if I want to install something eg KHexedit I get the 64bit KDE 4 version. It has problems. There seems to be no way of asking for 32bit apps or am I missing something? How would an update insist on installing something that was not available? Ignoring for a second the rather nihilistic nature of that statement, you can indeed install the 32bit one but you may have to install a great deal of the associated 32bit KDE as well. At which point you may as well install the 32bit version of the kernel, 32bit KDE, and be done with it. I use Khexedit and have no problems with it. -- ----------JSA--------- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Poor syntax on my part bought on by problems. There is an all in one link for multimedia updates available. Some of the items installed are available in 64bit some aren't. The installer doesn't examine the possability of installing all 32bit software but restricts itself to 64bit. I did manage to tell it to ignore my "optimum architecture" eventually and allow the resolver to run longer but I could only complete the installation by dropping a dependancy - this strongly suggests that something will be broken when I try to use what ever it was. 64bit Khexedit is actaully the kde4 version. If I use "open with" it doesn't open the file. Just launches khexedit. If I then open the file manually within Khexedit all seems ok until I scroll to the very end of the file and the whole thing disappears into outer space. No crash msg or anything else. And as I stated there doesn't seem to be any way of telling the installer to install the 32bit version. Frankly I don't care if it results in doubling or even tripling or more the size of my linux installation. I chose the option on install that should allow me to run 32bit code. It doesn't.
