The error I keep getting when I try to attempt to manage subscriptions is "Thunderbird failed to connect to server (So-and-So)".....
looks like a passord problem. Did you provide one? I have no problems here jdd -- http://dodin.org

-> This needs to be done first to get your regular email access back
Otherwise, we recommend using the GMX App for iOS or Android. This application also offers direct access to your mailbox.
(Which is IMHO a bad idea....)
If you prefer UI overloaded with advertising and tons of external scripts running, go ahead. I doubt that GMX provides access to Newsgroups - at least I could not spot it on the web frontend. I used to have a separate News provider - party the network provider has a news server running Or do you talk about Mailing lists as 'Newsgroups'? They come as normal mails into your mailbox.....so just use SMTP and IMAP to fetch mails with Thunderbird HTH Axel

I would like to be able to read "alt.os.linus.SUSE Busy Group".
I have "alt.os.linux.suse" only in my usenet server (free.fr) did you notice the typo, it's probably not "linus" but linux. nothing to do with gmx jdd -- http://dodin.org

I am much more concerned with using Thunderbird for Newsgroups initially since I have never done that before.
if by "newsgroups" you mean nntp/usenet, each server have it's own login.password https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet for example http://news.aioe.org/ jdd -- http://dodin.org

The email setup in Thunderbird is not related at all to the news setup. In fact, it is customary in Usenet to provide a FALSE or FAKED email account. For example: pj@countrycode.invalid If you want to set up email in Thunderbird, ask about it in another subthread. Don't mix the issues.
It is not offtopic. You say you want news first, so ignore email, don't set it up. However, it is usually preferable to use email via Thunderbird or suitable client rather than web browser - but your ISP may require you to configure for it first in the web page. That's fine. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.2 x86_64 at Telcontar)

To the opensuse forums on nntp? They are not up.
Do you actually have a proxy on your network?
There is no such server as alt.os.linux.suse, it is all wrong. It is a group, not a server. The first step is to decide and configure a _valid_ news server, and none of those you post about are valid. And your problems with email are not related to your problems with news. Try with, for instance: nntp.aioe.org I use News.Individual.NET, but it is 10€ per year. Worth it. For testing, try first with aioe. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.2 x86_64 at Telcontar)
