Hi All, The devel:languages:ruby:extensions/ruby-fcgi build is failing ATM because: Executing(%build): /bin/sh -e /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.vtRX8Z ... + ruby -rvendor-specific install.rb config /usr/lib64/ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `require': cannot load such file -- vendor-specific (LoadError) from /usr/lib64/ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `require' Our ruby 1.8 supported -rvendor-specific, but 1.9 apparently does not. Do we need this? Or can I just get rid of the "-rvendor-specific" bits from the ruby-fcgi spec file? (I'm not familiar with this option...) Hi guys, I've had fun with patching some rubygems lately, and wasn't entirely fond of how we do it currently. Thus, I'd like to propose a little addition to our rubygem macros we provide to packagers. Currently we only have the %gem_install macro, which has several shortcomings. Not only does everything happen within %buildroot (with %prep and %build sections unused), it also makes patching unpacked sources tedious. You have to provide patches as 'SourceX' and cd into the gem install path in the buildroot in order to patch in the %install section... Last but not least, this only works by the help of a openSUSE-specific patch for rubygems (adding buildroot support for 'gem install'), thus the ugly "Buildrequires: rubygems_with_buildroot_patch" everywhere. As you can see, the %gem_install macro still has the old behavior when one parameter is provided. Currently, the %gem_build macro tries to find the gemspec, because 'gem build' wants to be in the same directory. Lastly, the %gem_install macro searches the resulting gem, as git source tarballs tend to have funny directory names As a next step, I would like to adjust gem2rpm-opensuse to generate spec files accordingly. If we decide to use this in d:l:r:e, we hopefully can get away with that buildroot patch eventually. We have a bunch of packages that are non gem versions of gems. e.g. ruby-ldap : replaced by rubygem-ruby-ldap, already contains the Obsoletes line. There is also rubygem-net-ldap Ok to delete these non-building packages? Hi, I'm evaluating porting OBS to rails 3 and while there are tons of annoying problems, that are ugly to fix but are "just work", I have a real problem with the now deprecated find functions. Let's take an example: attribs.find(:first, :joins => "LEFT OUTER JOIN attrib_types at ON attribs.attrib_type_id = at.id LEFT OUTER JOIN attrib_namespaces an ON at.attrib_namespace_id = an.id", :conditions => ["at.name = BINARY ? and an.name = BINARY ? and attribs.binary = BINARY ?", name, namespace, binary]) That's find_attribute and worked ok in rails 2.3 - it's a pretty huge join and a rather useless big result, but ok. Now with rails 3, find(:first) is not only deprecated but also joins set the result to readonly, so I can't do an update to Attrib. What I did (after a lot of trial and error and googling around was): a = attribs.joins(:attrib_type => :attrib_namespace).where("attrib_types.name = BINARY ? and attrib_namespaces.name = BINARY ? and ISNULL(attribs.binary)", name, namespace).first a = attribs.where(:id => a.id).first if a && a.readonly? I found the existing documentating I could find rather unpleasant, they always only cover simple cases or examples I don't understand ;( Does anyone have a recommendation for such "at the limits" cases? Hi, As I have a high interest in getting ruby 1.9 (as default ruby) into factory to replace the soon out of maintenance 1.8, darix invited me to work out a plan how to have gems build for 1.8 and 1.9. So I renamed ruby to ruby18 and added a ruby package that defines the default ruby. With this I rebuilt all gems that I have installed on my workstation as 1.9 version. But that doesn't solve the 1.8 backward problem - and while it doesn't sound _soo_ important, I already found the lack of a way to test the 1.8 stack in comparision when porting quite bothering :) So I changed the gem2rpm template to output always two ruby versions. ruby18-gem-gettext and ruby19-gem-gettext. This _kind_ of works, but both these gems install stuff in %_bindir and they conflict (other files are in ruby version specific dirs). I see several options: 1. Most of the executables are just wrappers for the real stuff happening in ruby modules, so just package the executables for the default ruby version. 2. add a suffix to the non-default ruby versions 3. add a suffix to all executables and provide update-alternative hooks all around 4. even more complex stuff :) The mid term goal is to have it clear from the binary rpm name which ruby version it is for - ruby 1.8 will be around for a while. Hi All, Got a bit of a problem... Gem::all_load_paths in rubygems 1.8.15 in Factory is broken. Some small description is at: https://github.com/rubygems/rubygems/issues/171 Now, this is a deprecated method, but rubygem-gettext uses it, so rubygem-gettext is effectively broken in turn, see: https://github.com/mutoh/gettext/pull/11 This in turn breaks applications which use rubygem-gettext, which is what I actually care about :) AFAICT no patch has been proposed to fix the deprecated method in rubygems (maybe nobody cares, it's deprecated, right?), and nobody has picked up the proposed patch for the gettext gem upstream. So, what's the right course of action? I guess I can patch our version of the gettext gem, assuming we're happy to carry non-upstream patches. Or, I could try to monkey patch around the whole problem in my application, but I don't want to do that, because it's ugly, and it doesn't help anyone else who's going to hit this. Comments? Hi all, rubygem-rdoc curredoes not build and blocks many packages. The problem is that rubygem-json does not provide rubygem-json-1 anymore (see https://build.opensuse.org/package/rdiff?linkrev=base&package=rubygem-json&… ), but rubygem-rdoc still requires it. Could someone fix it? However, before going deeper into such matters I wanted to ask who of you would be willing to join such a group, meet up on a monthly basis and discuss Ruby/Rails related topics (maybe even over a beer or two)? Don't be afraid to answer here. You're not signing up for anything. I just wanted to see the level of interest among you. Depending on how many people are interested in joining I'll go forth and think of a suitable location. [opensuse-ruby] Dependency on rails

Hi, I update few gems to work with rails3. And I find one quite strange behavior of build. When there is requirement to have at least rails3 I cannot specify it. If I use rubygem-activesupport-3 or rubygem-activesupport >= 3.0 then I get this[0] output. Is there any solution? I am a happy user of rvm. Recently a competitor for rvm appeared called rbenv, which seems to be cleaner, using less shell tricks and separating the handling of environments and building and installing rubies. This makes also easier to use it system-wide (rpm package) See https://github.com/sstephenson/rbenv I just want to evaluate it, but I have submitted initial packages for rbenv and ruby-build to devel:languages:ruby:extensions. the usage is very similar, and ruby-build ads a rbenv install command for integration. I do have in my bashrc a export RBENV_ROOT=/space/rbenv so that NFS is not used. Then do rbenv init and it will tell you what else to do. I would be interested in experiences and thoughts. My experience so far: - ruby 1.9.2 does not build - switching to a version still makes system gems visible. Although it's actually not a problem (package installation works) it looks at least strange and suspicious. hi, while debugging an issue earlier this week i stumbled upon "gem install --ignore-dependencies" if we would use that. we could drop almost all buildrequires from our rubygem-* packages. this would allow us rebuilding projects like d:l:r:e much faster. also changes to some lower level gems would not rebuild all the packages on top. though it comes at the price with more work for our packagers. they would need to check if any of the required gems are used at build time. as gem doesnt differ between install time and runtime dependencies (only development time dependencies are split out so far), we might have to find that out manually. question is ... do we want to pay that price? darix -- openSUSE - SUSE Linux is my linux openSUSE is good for you www.opensuse.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ruby+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-ruby+help(a)opensuse.org

I would like to know which tools you use to perform full-stack testing of your rails apps. In the past I used for some time Selenium, but I never liked it very much. hi, everyone has to debug a memory leak once in a while. the last time i looked at memprof it lacked support for detached debuginfo as we use them in the distro. that got fixed in the mean time. 0.3.10 is in d:l:r:e now. happy debugging darix p.s.: the gem is generated from a branch to fix some build time issues. Hi all! As a part of our Boosters' sprint we try to get more packages to Factory. I checked d:l:r:e and only 44 out of 662 rubygems maintained there are also submitted to Factory. I'd like to start a discussion if we want to create out-of-the-box experience for Ruby developers or we'd rather force them to add d:l:r:e repo to their system. Hi, I, Pepa and Flavio were looking at a way to save space in our appliances. A major waste of disk space is the way we build gems into rpms: any rubygem-*.rpm includes the generated RDoc and RI documentation, averaging over a HALF of the rpm size. Furthemore, tests amount to another half of the rest. For example, rubygem-activerecord-2_3-2.3.8 is 12MB on disk, of which 6MB is one example sql file(!) and the actual library is 900KB, the rest being test cases. We propose to split off these parts to *-doc and *-testsuite subpackages, by enhancing the gem2rpm (opensuse) template. Another savings possibility is to completely remove the original gem file kept in the cache directory, arguing that if people install it via RPM, they are used to having the package on a remote repo only (or cached by libzypp). (Not implemented yet) Attached is a patch against opensuse.spec.template from rubygem-gem2rpm-0.6.0-13.2.i586.rpm (which BTW differs from SVN HEAD). We have tried it on one gem so far. Does it look good for sending upstream and for applying it across OBS (Factory, devel:languages:ruby:extensions)? Hi, Can anyone tell me if BleakHouse[1] is packaged anywhere on openSUSE? I note a commented-out define to enable it in the ruby spec file, and a note in the changelog from 2007-12-06 that support for building with bleak_house was added, but this requires the "ruby-bleakhouse" package, which doesn't seem to exist (hopefully I'm just missing something obvious). Alternately, can anyone recommend any other good memory leak checkers? Hey, i just stumbled about autotest (http://ph7spot.com/musings/getting-started- with-autotest). It's a nifty little tool wich continously runs the tests on your rails project whenever a source file has been changed. It will only run the affected tests, so it's quite performant and it has a bunch of useful plugins, e.g. for getting desktop notifications about the test results. If you want to test it you need to install 2 gems sudo gem install ZenTest autotest-rails and just execute 'autotest' in the rails root. Sometimes ago I tried to figure out how to tests ActiveResouce. Unfortunately there are two possible choices around: use mocha or use the ActiveResource::HttpMock.responds_to method. Stubbing ActiveResource objects/calls with mocha is really annoying and produces ugly and unmaintainable code (especially when you have big/complex objects). Using ActiveResource::HttpMock is slightly better, but unfortunately you have to write manually all the request/response pairs that are going to be used by your test. You have also to write all the objects that are going to be transformed into ActiveResource instances by HttpMock. This really annoying and there's no way to avoid that (you cannot for example use fixtures). Hence I decided to create the active_resource_test_helper. Below you can find an explanation about how it works and how it can be used. You can find the code on github: http://github.com/flavio/active_resource_test_helper You can install the gem from gemcutter or using the package from devel:languages:ruby:extensions (it's called rubygem- active_resource_test_helper and I've just submitted it). [opensuse-ruby] How to test REST API

Hi, We've found out that our RoR-based application can crash if broken XML is sent as a request to the application REST API. I've tried to create a test case that simulates sending XML - as found on several forums and howtos - by using @request.env['RAW_POST_DATA'] but this variable seems to be ignored during the test. See the attached file, please. I've tested that the application behaves differently if the very same XML is POSTed to REST API by curl. See the command below (XML sent to server is different here): curl -H 'Accept: application/xml' -H 'Content-type: application/xml' -u '$user:$password' --data-binary '<xml/&' --http-request POST https://$server:443/$path How can I test it? hi, Michael Calmer ran into a bug with regexp in ruby 1.8.[1] Rails sets the $KCODE variable to UTF-8, which changes the meaning of the \w class. To quote answer in the bug: [[[ Ruby 1.8's /\w/u matches [0-9a-zA-Z_] and all non ASCII of Unicode. ]]] In Ruby 1.9 and JRuby this part of the ruby spec changed and behaves as expected. [opensuse-ruby] rack-1.1.0 in d:l:r:e breaks RoR installation

Hi, I found that after updating my FACTORY workstation WebYaST stopped working and it prints this error at start: Missing the Rails gem. Please `gem install -v= rails`, update your RAILS_GEM_VERSION setting in config/environment.rb for the Rails version you do have installed, or comment out RAILS_GEM_VERSION to use the latest version installed. After some debugging I found that the problem is caused by the new rubygem-rack-1.1.0. The problem is that actionpack-2.3.5.gemspec contains: s.add_dependency(%q<rack>, ["~> 1.0.0"]) Which doesn't match 1.1.0 version and therefore rails exit with the error. (the meaning of '~>' is described at http://rubygems.rubyforge.org/rubygems-update/Gem/Version.html ) After downgrading rack to 1.0.1 (fortunately it is still available in FACTORY) it works. What is the right solution? Do we need to change (upgrade?) actionpack or rack in d:l:r:e should be downgraded? I am trying to summarize the gems freezing tricky parts again, as it was not easy to explain the problem to darix. We don't have a single rpm .spec file and split the plugins in subpackages but have one .spec in the main rails app and one .spec per plugin. Imagine the building of one plugin. The source is unpacked, and the plugin dependent gems are installed in the build environment via rpm BuildRequires (the sames that are listed in init.rb in the plugin using config.gem directives). Same with the base rails app, which is a build require and found at build time via the Rails.parent hack. The spec file runs rake gems:unpack and uh oh!. Not only the gems of the plugin are unpacked but also the ones from the main rails app, which rails sees as "one tree". There are more possible problems. In the example above, the freezed gems would go to the main app vendor/gems directory. Hi, I create own wrapper over ActiveResource and found quite interesting problem which blocking my work. If I create ancestor of ActiveResource::Base then everything works, but when I create ancestor of ancestor then it stop working (exactly it return nil on method which should not return nil, because it is accessor with default and I assign value so it should return assigned value or default but not nil). Hi One of the first problems we hit by using the Rails 2.3 engine was the usage of the static files directory. Engines do not support their own public/ directory. This is because rails does not serve it, but the http server directly. This means that even if our engines are under plugins/$foo, the static files like images and _javascript_files_ have to go under the main app public/ braking this structure. As we are a packaged application, where files should not be touched manually, and the application files should be read only and immutable (so the original engines sync task was not an option), we still needed to provide the vendors with the ability to override any file to alter the look and feel. Like for example, dropping a new css file with the same name somewhere to be used instead of the main one. This was achieved by a small hack: # In order to overwrite,exchange images, stylesheets,.... for special vendors there # is the directory "vendor" in the "public" directory. Each file in the public # directory can be exchanged by putting a file with the same path in the vendor # directory. # Please take care that all links in the views have to be defined by the AssetTagHelper like # image_tag, stylesheet_link_tag, javascript_include_tag, ... config.action_controller.asset_host = Proc.new do |source, request| path = "#{config.root_path}/public/vendor#{source}".split("?") if path.length >0 and File.exists?(path[0]) "#{request.protocol}#{request.host_with_port}/vendor" else "" end end The ability for plugins to have their own public directory was solved by using a rack middle-ware, but this only worked in development mode, because in a normal setup, the http server was the first in the rack chain. # look for all existing loaded plugin's public/ directories plugin_assets = init.loaded_plugins.map { |plugin| File.join(plugin.directory, 'public') }.reject { |dir| not (File.directory?(dir) and File.exist?(dir)) } init.configuration.middleware.use YaST::Rack::StaticOverlay, :roots => plugin_assets This problem hits bad on javascript files. Right now if we want to have a separate javascrpt file that decorates/validates/autocompletes a view, it needs to go in the main app public directory. Which means you can have it together with the other files. When packaging it, it can be installed there, but while running in development mode you just want to edit the file and reload. So I am looking for ways to solve this problem. Right now most of the views javascript is just inlined, which is not good. There are even nice plugins like this one: http://blog.media72.net/2008/05/13/javascript-auto-include-rails-plugin/ Which auto includes javascript files based on the name of the view (convention over configuration) so you don't even need to include the files from your views explicitly, but this still requires those files to be in public/ The only idea that is going around my head is actually serving those files from rails, having a kind of asset controller that could look into the filesystem and read the files. For us the performance of the http server is not that critical like it is for a heavy multiuser site. Is the problem understood? (I can try to explain more). It is good to see if you still has problem what means '<<' or 'class << self' or other tricks with objects and modules. The second one is about refactoring code and how to avoid common mistakes. It is imaginary dialog and it is quite funny (geek fun :). Hi, I implement ancestor which have some usable utilities for rest-service models. Reason to have it is in bug http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=543423 . I call it BaseModel and it is inspired by ActiveModel from rails3.0. It is general usability and I think that all models which is not based on database or REST service could benefit from it. ( just inform me, I can help you to use it in your project). Main features is: * callbacks (before_save etc.) * validations ( validates_format_of etc.) * serialization ( to_xml and to_json and also restore it) * mass assignment (load instance from hash, also whitelisting and blacklisting attributes for mass assignment). For details see documentation: http://yast.suse.de:3334/view/webyast/job/webyast-service-head- i586/javadoc/webservice/index.html classes in BaseModel namespace (sorry internal only, as we still doesn't have public place where we synchronize documentation ). Or you can generate it in git by rake doc:app in webservice directory. Hi, It will be nice if we have some active-record(-resource) like models in rest- service (same methods etc. to easy understand usage by other rails developers). We use as backend DBus. After some investigating I found that there is ActiveModel for rails (also in 2.3.4 and 2.3.5), but marked as experimental. Do you have any experience with it? Also how it should be packaged? Hi all, I'd like to discuss the problem reported in bug #550934 ('It takes minutes to refresh "system is up to date" and "system is healthy"') It takes very long time to load the initial patches and system status information which is displayed on the first page (the WebYaST control center) using AJAX requests. I already have implemented caching in the patches module so the available patches are not evaluated in every control center reload. But the first call still takes much time... The problem is that the first patch status request triggers repository metadata download and cache rebuild which in case of slow/bad/overloaded network connection can take several minutes (as reported in the bug). A similar problem is in the status module, but not that serious - the status is read from the local machine so network is not involved in this case. And even on a slow machine it won't block for more than several seconds. I have these possible solutions for reading the patch status: * don't display the status messages at all (IMO bad solution, I find the overview messages quite useful...) * make displaying of the status messages configurable (so users can hide and disable status loading if it's too slow) * use a background job for reading patches (display a generic message like "Reading patches" when the request takes too long and refresh the status after some time again to get the real status.) AFAIK an AJAX request cannot be stopped (at least the [Stop] button in FF is disabled when the page is loaded but an AJAX request is in progress). I'd prefer the last solution. Any other suggestion/solution? Thank you in advance! Hi, I want use in webyast aggregation of css in template (see stylesheet_link_tag option :cache). But I found problem that rails create new aggregated template in stylesheets directory and this directory doesn't have permissions for yast as webyast cannot modify itself sources, css or javascript due to security reason. Do you have similar problem and how you solve it? If I try to solve it by symlink, but to writable directory by webyast, but it uses touched file. Hi, in short: I update wiki page with two new videos - http://en.opensuse.org/YaST/Web/Development/TrainingKit/Learning_Ruby_and_R… longer description: First what I see is instruction video from railscast about new things in rails 2.3 (so little older). It introduce three features. Scope and batches is useful for ActiveRecord (database). Third one is method try on Object. I think it is really useful method which we should start using to simplify our code (but do not overuse). especially if code contains if o && o.map && o.map[:test] you can simple type if o.try(:map).try(:"[]",:test) If you don't know this feature I suggest look at that short video, because your quality of your code is limited by your knowledge of used api. Second one is from Gotham conference SOLID object design. I really recommend this video, because if you are not design guru which knows the latest news you give a lot of new ideas how to improve your code quality (so everyone in webyast team should look at it, especially if he want change something in framework). The presentation shows in example what is advantage of dynamic languages and why rails has so popular api. It shows how you can write code which need not to modify much and which is easily extendable. Also shows what to do if your class depends on class (libraries, modules, config files) which is changed more often then your class. Hi, Here is my summary of my documentation tour experimenting. 1) I improve readme of rest-service. If you find that there is missing some essential information, please add it. 2) I test few tools to generate doc and here is result: a) classic rdoc - http://w3.suse.de/~jreidinger/webservice It is mature and working documentation tool without problems, but generated pages is not nice and user-friendly. b) yard - http://w3.suse.de/~jreidinger/webservice-yard/ Contain some advance features and is compatible with rdoc. I found problems if generated for whole git (as you can see it is not finded any README_FOR_APP). Also it doesn't generate links which is in rest-service README_FOR_APP. I try contact authors. c) new rdoc - http://w3.suse.de/~jreidinger/webservice-nrdoc/ New version contains better UI and also few good features like quick search, but it looks like some items is not showed (like just few files, few classes). Search functionality is nice. Clickable sources is also quite good. Hi, I watched quite intersting Rails video last week (http://goruco2009.confreaks.com/30-may-2009-14-45-into-the-heart-of-darknes…) here are the most interesting suggestions I remember: 1) Know APIs - it is very important to know the standard Ruby library and Rails enhancements to avoid reinventing wheel in your code and write the code efficiently. See http://ruby-doc.org/core http://ruby-doc.org/stdlib http://api.rubyonrails.org 2) Learn common Ruby constructs like value ||= 1234 (instead of: value = 1234 if value.nil?) if value ... (instead of: if not value.nil?) 3) Define a common coding style and document it, ensure that new team members read it and are familiar with it. I just got the question of what does something like this means: some_method(*foo) This is the splat or expand operator (not a real operator), so if foo is an array, every element becomes an argument So some_method(*[1,2,3]) is equivalent to some_method(1,2,3) Or you can for example create an array from an element and another array: [1, *[2,3,4]] is equivalent to [1,2,3,4] def some_method(arg1, *args) end is used in parameters to implement variable number of arguments. Ruby matches normal parameters, then parameters with defaults and the rest goes to the array argument. Some gems put the ext/ source directory inside the gem, causing 2 types of warning/errors: - the source .c files get inside the gem, causing rpmlint to complain - sometimes the library gets duplicated in ext and lib /usr/lib64/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/nokogiri-1.3.3/lib/nokogiri/nokogiri.so /usr/lib64/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/nokogiri-1.3.3/ext/nokogiri/nokogiri.so because it is build in one and installed in the other. The ext/ one is useless and ignored, but makes the buildid extractor dizzy when creating debuginfo packages. As all rpm gems contain: %gem_install %{S:0} %gem_cleanup Shouldn't %gem_cleanup do rm -rf %{buildroot}/%{_libdir}/ruby/gems/%{rb_ver}/gems/%{mod_name}-%{version}/ext ? Hi, I just have sent a report about Rails videos via email. What about a summary wiki page? With short description and rating for each video or blog article? I mean sending an email is OK, but it's lost in time, if you have spare time and you would like to watch a video or read a blog it would be nice just to look at a wiki page and select one which is rated well and is relevant to you or looks interesting to you. I just have watched "Into the Heart of Darkness: Rails Anti-Patterns" Rails video: Anti-patterns are wrong solutions which people do again and again when solving a common problem. This video describes how to avoid anti-patterns in Rails - study standard libraries in Ruby and Rails, do code review in team, discuss/set common rules and document them, use metrics to check the code (reek or metric_fu), use a build server, don't write useless tests... Hi all, I have spent my learning time watching two rails videos: Building Blocks of Modularity (lenght: ~30 minutes) ----------------------------- http://mwrc2009.confreaks.com/14-mar-2009-18-10-the-building-blocks-of-modu… This video describes kinds of bindings between parts of an application and how to make the bindings weak so changes in one module affect the other modules as least as possible. My rating: Nice video, worth of seeing. Usually known facts, but grouped together in an interesting context. Improving the Usability of Your RoR Applications (lenght: ~30 minutes) ------------------------------------------------ http://mwrc2009.confreaks.com/14-mar-2009-12-30-improving-the-usability-of-… I found the first half the most interesting, there are several tips how to make UI good looking and how to ensure that user feels safe and comfortable using your application. One of the examples is gmail's status message after deleting an email - it displays "undo" link in the successful message so the user can easily revert the action after a mistake. The second part displays changes in a specific application, this part was not much interesting for me.
