Hi,
I have a HP Compaq 8510w with the ATI FireGL option (a laptop with both
a VGA and a HDMI connector). Running lspci reports the card as
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M76 [Radeon
Mobility HD 2600 Series],
and the Xorg logs report
(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) ATI Technologies Inc unknown chipset (0x9581) rev 0,
Mem @ 0xd0000000/28, 0xe4400000/16, I/O @ 0x4000/8.
I compiled and installed the latest radeonhd driver from the git tree
yesterday (2008-04-11), and am still experiencing the following:
1- The EDID information for the laptop screen is not aquired under any
circumstances. The Xorg log file contains lines like so
(II) RADEONHD(0): Query for AtomBIOS Get Panel EDID: failed
(WW) RADEONHD(0): No monitor size info, assuming 96dpi
(strange that 'Panel' is not all in caps there like everywhere else).
The VESA driver, however, reports the following:
(II) VESA(0): VESA VBE DDC supported
(II) VESA(0): VESA VBE DDC Level 2
(II) VESA(0): VESA VBE DDC transfer in appr. 1 sec.
(II) VESA(0): VESA VBE DDC read successfully

2- If I plug an external monitor into the HDMI port (through a HDMI ->
DVI cable), either before or after starting Xorg, the monitor indicates
it is switchng to DVI mode, but nothing happens on the computer end
(xrandr report nothing and nothing shows up in the Xorg logs).
3- If I plug an external monitor into the VGA port before starting Xorg,
it is recognized, and I can fully control it via xrandr. However, I
loose my ability to switch to a virtual terminal (ctrl+alt+F1), and the
latop screen also refuses to work (remains dark) on any subsequent
restarts of Xorg (without rebooting the latop) unless the external
monitor is re-plugged into the VGA port before the restart.
When I'm experiencing this dark screen thing, the Xorg log file reports:

Further, once I unplug the VGA connection, xrandr starts reporting bogus
DVI-D_1 information until the next time I re-plugin the VGA connection
(even if nothing has ever been plugged into the HDMI connection):

4- If I plug an external monitor into the VGA port after Xorg has
started, it is detected, but any request to enable it fails as follows:

The Xorg log file only reports the monitor EDID information.
I have attached a complete log for the following session:
1- Boot the machine up with no external connections attached.
2- Run 'xrandr' (reports the laptop screen).
3- Plug in a VGA connection.
4- Run 'xrandr' (reports the laptop screen and the VGA).
5- Run 'xrandr --output VGA_1 --auto' (it barfs as above).
6- Disconnect the VGA connection.
7- Run 'xrandr' (reports the laptop screen).
8- Plug in a HDMI connection (HDMI->DVI cable monitor).
9- Run 'xrandr' (reports the laptop screen).
10- Disconnect the HDMI connection.
(the log file indicates 1.1.0 non-git sources, but that is because
I erased the .git directory after fetching it).
Thanks! -Tyson

Hi everybody,
around 4 weeks ago I've got a new HD 2600 Pro cause the graphics card in
my media/vdr system just stopped working. The main reason for getting
the HD 2600 was that it is able to send the HD Audio via an DVI->HDMI
Adapter directly to my LCD TV.
After some try&error i found out that the sound device of the card is
supported by alsa, but works only with the help of the binary only fglrx
driver. The only problem remaining was that the fglrx driver is SO
FUCKING UNSTABLE that it deadlocks the system aprox every 10 minutes.
So i started to reverse engine what the fglrx driver does to make HDMI
Audio working, with the goal to add this to the radeonhd driver.
At that point i simply assumed that it wasn't more than turning some
bits in an reg on or off. This assumption turns out to be wrong, but
after 3 weeks of debugging i finally got it working.
The following patch is far away from being complete. The Video und Audio
InfoFrames are not calculated correctly and i don't have any clue what
most of the registers are used for and i never worked with git before so
hopefully the patch is in the correct form.
I would really like to complete my work so does anybody have an register
documentation off the Azalia/HDMI engine?
If somebody find this use full please leave me a note and sorry for my
poor English.
cu, Christian.

OK, i've fixed the messages now.
I've added a heuristic that catches exactly the situation where a DVI
device only has one single analog output and no hpd pin.

Created an attachment (id=14206)
--> (http://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=14206)
xorg log
My video card requires swapped HPD in order to correctly detect a monitor
connected to its DVI connector.
The monitor is a NEC MultiSync LCD 1770NX.
The video card is a X1550 (RV516), details in the xorg log.
The monitor connected to the VGA output is detected without problems.
My xorg.conf device section:
Section "Device"
Identifier "The Card"
Driver "radeonhd"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
Option "monitor-VGA_1" "Right Monitor"
Option "monitor-DVI-I_1/digital" "Left Monitor"
Option "HPD" "swap"
Option "RROutputOrder" "DVI-I_1/digital"
EndSection
If I comment out the HPD option, only the right monitor is enabled.

Fix a double free.
rout->Connector->EDID is already freed by OutputSetEDID(). NULL it so that
RHDMonitorDestroy() doesn't free it again.

Fix connector name when it is obvious that it's not DVI but VGA.
This fix applies the same heuristic as in commit 3358d97 to the
connector name synthetization. For connector tables from the
supported device list this has already been taken care of so this
is not strictly necessary. It's in here more as a save guard.

Add heuristic to fix connector information when AtomBIOS wrongfully lists a VGA as DVI.
AtomBIOS supported device lists sometimes list a VGA connector as a DVI. If we
find a DVI connector with only one output attached, if this output is a DAC
and there is no HDP we assume that we are dealing with a VGA connector.

Don't probe for TV on DACA for R5xx/R6xx.
DAC A on R5/6xx doesn't seem to have a TV mode. The docs for RV620/635
are less clear about this. So this still needs to be checked.

[Bug 14609] New: Laptop panel output blinks randomly (zoomed in screen)

Summary: Laptop panel output blinks randomly (zoomed in screen)
Product: xorg
Version: unspecified
Platform: Other
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: Driver/radeonhd
AssignedTo: lverhaegen(a)suse.de
ReportedBy: fry.kun(a)gmail.com
QAContact: xorg-team(a)lists.x.org
For some reason my laptop panel randomly (with time intervals generally in the
order of days) blinks for a moment, and right away goes back to normal.
The problem appears with both fglrx and radeonhd.
The different content appears and disappears very fast (I'd say a single
frame/screen refresh), and there doesn't seem to be any screen corruption
before or after it.
After seeing it for a while (a year?), I've started noticing a pattern: when it
happens while I'm looking to the side (external monitor), I notice shapes that
look a lot like zoomed in text -- so I suspect that the blink is actually a
zoomed-in version of the screen.
I think I've heard similar symptoms mentioned in passing before, but I can't
rule out a hardware failure (as this only seems to happen on panel, never on
the external monitor)
The laptop in question is Dell Inspiron E1505
