Hi folks, I found a little link that relates a perl hotplug project, it's show many improvements of performance, but is it true? Someone already used or tested it? Is it possible to use with SUPER? Improving bootup time by 11 seconds

Hi list! I tried to find out if preloading can improve startup time if you use autologin (=no login screen, KDE gets started immediately). With just one small modification I managed to save 11.6 seconds on my system, bringing the time from 71 seconds down to 59.4! This would certainly be a great thing for the 1CD install, so I would like you to test this. I want to see if it is really that easy to improve performance. Setup: - activate autologin for a user that uses KDE - Insert a command in /etc/init.d/boot.localfs. Change > rc_status > mount -av -t nonfs,noproc,nodevpts,nosmbfs -O no_netdev > rc_status -v1 -r > ;; >stop) to > rc_status > mount -av -t nonfs,noproc,nodevpts,nosmbfs -O no_netdev > /usr/bin/ionice -n6 /sbin/preload < /var/cache/preload/kde.preload & > rc_status -v1 -r > ;; >stop) The only remaining problem is timing. A stopwatch is too unprecise, so I have attached a file that you should place in /opt/kde3/share/autostart. Small Problems with SLICK

Hi, i've installed SLICK from this iso, today: super-SLICK-RC1-20050920-modified-kde.iso now, it works fine, but there were/are some little problems, i'd like you to know ;-) I don't know if that's the right ML to discuss these topics, but i feared that i would have heared, "that's not the pure Opensuse, that's a modified thing.." if i've posted it on the opensuse-ML. I think, this is a "minimized" version of the RC1...? - when i booted from the CD, there was something like a "christmas screen", with Xmas-xpenguins running across the screen. is it intended that everyone on 1th of october gets this screen? The date was recognized well, when i came to the time-zone-section in install. - after installing i tried to run apt-get update, but that didn't work for ftp4.gwdg.de, but after inserting ftp.gwdg.de to the sources.list, it works. the server is definetely online, Err http://ftp4.gwdg.de SuSE/10.0-i386 release Connection failed 0% [Waiting for headers] - adding ftp://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS-RC1/inst-source/ in yast2 works fine. - the x-Authorities are not really set. Root can connect to the user's xserver. That's a thing i've noticed in the SUSE-10-Betas as well, but never asked, why... will the final version contend the restricted standard? - another thing i've noticed in the beta, and here: after choosing German as Layout and as Language, the tastatur-Layout must be set to German manually in Yast after installation, because it's the US's one. super in vmware

hello ! has anybody tested super under vmware ? this seems to fail.. (Test: Installation (in vmware under SuSE 9.2) with virtual SCSI-Disk, LVM and XFS.) is it possible that theres no lvm -package and therefore it can be installed but after reboot it wont load at all ? andreas

About OpenSuSE Super kernel

Hi, I like to ask if you have found your kernel guy to integrate Con Kolivas patches to OpenSuSE Super kernel? I have been toying with kernel 5 five years now. I work at small firm that develops embedded linux machines and I have been compiling kernel to ARM, PowerPC, SPARC and x86 (example VIA) machines. I've been also compiled binary RPMS for our firm use (We commonly use SuSE for our develoment). They can be found at http://tuukka.pasanen.net/programs/kernel/index.htm. So if vacation is open I can be interested in that:) Only problem is I read bit german (I've been working there a while) but I can't write or speak it. So I can't get along with forum and stuff.. Removing unnecessary applications

Hi list! Many of you have probably noticed that openSUSE by default installs (and starts) a number of applications that many people do not need. Examples are the sshd (even started on desktop systems...), Kinternet and the like. If these unneeded programs get removed, we can save a couple of MB of RAM and also make booting faster. I tried this with the following programs that are started by default, but unnecessary on _my_ system: kinternet, sshd, klipper, smpppd, susewatcher. On a freshly booted system, memory usage went down from 87.8 to 82.7 megabytes. This means I can save 5.1MB of RAM. On other systems you will of course have different results because the user may have a different setup. So I think we should have a small tool that asks the user a few questions about his system and disables/uninstalls the programs in question. These few MB could make quite a difference for people with little RAM! Another candidate on my list is portmap. It is needed for importing NFS file systems, which not that many people do. I'm just wondering if it is also necessary for anything else that a user might want? Maybe other programs could be disabled as well. Feel free to suggest one. Cheers nordi

Startup times using Kolivas patch-2.6.13-8-suse-ck5 on RC1

Hello all I downloaded Con Kolivas' patch-2.6.13-8-suse-ck5.bz yesterday and compiled it into a RC1 kernel (on a P4 1.6 GHz 256 Megs) I then measured kde, openOffice, Firefox and konqueror startup times two or three times using each kernel Here are the results: ########################### Con Kelvas ###################### RC1 Standard Kernel #################### (2.6.13-ck5-8-default) ########## (2.6.13-8-default) startup till desktop ###### 76 ############################## 70 openOffice ################ 14 ############################## 15 Firefox ################### 6 ############################### 7 konqueror ################# 2 ############################### 2 Note: Startup till kde desktop was measured from hiting enter on the grub menu until the kde desktop was up and running normally. SMP kernel for the 1CD isos?

Hi everybody! Since an increasing number of users has hyper-threaded CPUs, it would be a good idea to include a SMP kernel for the 1CD install (just heard it is not there, no time+bandwidth to test myself). Otherwise, you will probably have significantly lower performance with this type of CPU. Since there is little space on only one iso, I suggest that we ship a SMP-enabled kernel for everybody. This should not decrease performance for uniprocessor machines but get you full speed on hyperthreaded CPUS. Question: Is this going to break anything? I'm thinking especially of binary-only drivers that might not like SMP systems. Or maybe other problems when you run an SMP enabled kernel on a system with just 1 CPU. Cheers nordi

bugfix for kernel module in opensuse kernel?

Hi, I'm running into the following problem: With SuSE 9.2 it was possible to download the kernel module ov511 (one stable and one experimental version, 1.65 en 2.28 I think) and to compile it in order to use some webcams. As far as I understood this module is now maintained in the kernel tree. But with kernel 2.6.11 and later it won't work any more. Some people at www.linux-usb.org wrote that this module is not maintained any more. I've send some e-mails to the official maintainers, but no respons. Will opensuse have an optimized kernel without known bugs of the standard kernel modules? Is there a chance that someone of this community will supply / write a patch? ref: http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/search_res.php?pattern=webcam I own a (USB) Phillips ToUCam, which needs support for compression (= a cheap one), works great up to SuSE 9.2 Of coarse I can go to a shop and buy another webcam..... beta4 benchmark

Hello team Hut ab an alle SUSE developers! The beta4 benchmark is now available on http://www.opensuse.org/index.php?title=SUPER_standard_benchmark and show a significant performance gain over previous beta's. Boot speed and preloading have done the trick and made this the fastest feeling SUSE yet. I am extremely pleased with the system. Guys and girls in SUSE.de land have done such a great job! I bow and say thanks a lot for such an improvement from beta2 to beta4. What I tried is many other combinations. Stefan Kulow (coolo) will be pleased to hear that he is right about prelinking after all and even I am convinced now (how could I ever have doubted the master) that prelinking does not entail any significant improvement over an already well configured and preloaded KDE. It actually is all slightly slower. I have also created the same tests for 9.3, just to see how well the folks in Nuernberg are working and pushing themelves very hard to make it better and better ... they show indeed very well the areas in which everyone has improved things. The 1 CD install gave overall an expected boost when booting, since the install is considerably smaller and defragmenting has also some impact on boot time, but of course nothing on the already preloaded apps. There are more tests to be done in the next few days (new kernel and all improvements together), but I do believe that this release is speed wise ready to blow anything away that is out there. Testing other distro's on my reference system I can safely say that SUSE is fast as lightening. I hope you find the benches as useful as I do, even if they are not "science". SLICK and SUPER

Hello Since SLICK and the modified SUSE 10.0 iso's the SUPER project is planning are really pretty much identical and any duplication seems silly at this early stage of the openSUSE I have decided to drop my own modified KDE iso and bring both SLICK and SUPER closer together. Since SUPER is really the Experimental branch as I see it and SLICK is just what I wanted the optimized 1 CD install to be, there is really no point. SLICK can as such be called SUPER LIght Core and KDE. Simon the klick maintainer is going to integrate klik into openSUSE and I will work with him and Matt to produce SLICK together. The only issue that needs addressing really is compatibility as I think anything that has any real future should be 100% compatible with SUSE Linux, but matt's SLICK goals are more open to incompatibilities. I guess we cross that bridge when we have to ;) I hope this is ok ..... Andreas

hello everybody ! as you can see on www.slo-fi.de in forum, several people request smppd ppp pptp linux-atm-lib to get a dsl-connection with the 1_cd install. could you integrate that ? i think such packets shouldnt be missing because internet is a basic interest of most of the people. andreas

Stimulate building RPMs for SuSE

Please create a section on the opensuse.org web site where enthusiasts around the world can upload product RPMs for SuSE. I have used both Red Hat 8 and SuSE 9. SuSE is way more user-friendly than Red Hat. However, when it comes to installing products that are not included in the original distribution, or even updating an existing product, Red Hat becomes the king of the hill. My observation is that if a project distributes any binaries, RPMS for Red Hat/Fedora are always included, while RPMs for SuSE are not very popular. What I'm suggesting is that the opensuse.org web site becomes the ultimate location for third-party product RPMs for SuSE. It only takes some disk space and a couple of wiki pages. Thanks, Zlatko

Hi all on the lists ! even this is a IT-relatet list, I just will use it to ask everyone to hold on for a few minutes, and ask for attention for the victims of hurricane Katrina. about 10.000 people should have died as I've heard just in the news, and still hundrets of thousends need help ! even most of us here on the list may be outside the states and it may look like that we can't help - we can !! just have a look into your local news, it may be that there are some information where you can spend some money. even if you can spend only a few bucks. there are so many people who need help - now & quick. so look into the news, look for organisations trying to help ! if there is no special organisation at your place, look for the red cruise, because they will know at last where you can spend and help. this is no spam, as you may have already seen my name on mails here.
