Hello Since SLICK and the modified SUSE 10.0 iso's the SUPER project is planning are really pretty much identical and any duplication seems silly at this early stage of the openSUSE I have decided to drop my own modified KDE iso and bring both SLICK and SUPER closer together. Since SUPER is really the Experimental branch as I see it and SLICK is just what I wanted the optimized 1 CD install to be, there is really no point. SLICK can as such be called SUPER LIght Core and KDE. Simon the klick maintainer is going to integrate klik into openSUSE and I will work with him and Matt to produce SLICK together. The only issue that needs addressing really is compatibility as I think anything that has any real future should be 100% compatible with SUSE Linux, but matt's SLICK goals are more open to incompatibilities. I guess we cross that bridge when we have to ;) I hope this is ok ..... Andreas
Hello, How does the Gnome 1 CD fit into all this? Or is that yet another project? On Sat, 2005-09-10 at 16:10 -0600, Andreas Girardet wrote:

all the current 1 CD iso's are really just standard SUSE. I have personally no intention to do a SLICG ... but again freedom of choice and freedom of a different maintainer as opposed to a different project. Personally I do not use gnome ..... and I do not know if magnus is planning to extend his work on this to an optimised version. I do think that things needs to be part of the same project and just have different maintainers. This is why I suggest to integrate SLIK and SUPER, that way we won't get into the situation. Just another project that does pretty much the same thing .... Andreas
Hello everyone. Andreas Girardet was kind enough to provide some space for the minimalistic, desktop-oriented, optimized 1 CD install of SUSE 10, called SLICK (which stands for *S*UPER *Li*te: *C*ore + *K*DE. Since a lot of these goals have already been implemented via the 1 CD Install project, that is going to be the base for it, along with whatever work (if any) has already been done on the SUPER KLIK part. First thing though, I guess we need to establish some guidelines as to what is considered the Core + KDE part of SLICK. This is the backbone of the operating system that is still managed by RPM and can be updated, if so desired, by YaST Online Update. I thought that for starters, it would be nice to have a look at SUSE 10.0 RC1 rpms and mark those that would form the core of SLICK. For add-on applications, I would like to give klik a chance, since the developer has expressed interest in working with the openSUSE community to provide support for it. I definitely find the idea very interesting, though I also believe it needs to iron out some rough edges. More on this later, perhaps. I would greatly appreciate any ideas or comments you might have regarding this project, as well as any help I can get. I have nowhere near Andreas' experience in this field, I am mostly a Java developer and have been a Linux enthusiast since 1997 and will therefore greatly appreicate any guidance you may wish to provide. Remember to check out SLICK and SUPER_KLIK pages in the openSUSE wiki. Cheers, M.

I hope we can migrate things to an official opensuse server at some point. Just to avoid confusion ...... my server space is only an interim solution until we have the central build servers and repositories/webspace.

Simon has put quite a few apps already into the repository. Look at SUPER KLICK. He has scripts running converting the official rpm's into cmg's

The 1 CD install CD contains some info. Steps I would do 1.) Take the current kde 1 CDinstall, install it and start removing things until features break. There are quite a few base rpm's that are required for Networking an other hardware support. Create a base KDE. take rpm -qa and create a My.sel file. 2.) Put klik into it. 3.) master iso and test and fix 4.) Replace some i586 rpm's with i686 rpm's 5.) Integrate PrePr from SUPER Preloading 6.) Any other mods? 7.) master iso and Test and fix 8.) Release the

Yeah. let's experiment. No rule to stop that from happening ;)

well I am no Software developer and compared to SUSE people on this list I am just an amateur, when it comes to distro making. But I am happy to apply the little I do know. I am looking forward to some good teamwork ..... Andreas
All, I've updated the GNOME 1 CD Install with the following; Added Beagle Added F-Spot Added Tomboy Added kernel-smp and kernel-bigsmp Added gstreamer-default-plugins (fixes broken volume control) Added compat-libstdc++ Both a full ISO and a delta ISO is available. See http://www.opensuse.org/1_CD_install for details. Cheers, Magnus
