Hello all I downloaded Con Kolivas' patch-2.6.13-8-suse-ck5.bz yesterday and compiled it into a RC1 kernel (on a P4 1.6 GHz 256 Megs) I then measured kde, openOffice, Firefox and konqueror startup times two or three times using each kernel Here are the results: ########################### Con Kelvas ###################### RC1 Standard Kernel #################### (2.6.13-ck5-8-default) ########## (2.6.13-8-default) startup till desktop ###### 76 ############################## 70 openOffice ################ 14 ############################## 15 Firefox ################### 6 ############################### 7 konqueror ################# 2 ############################### 2 Note: Startup till kde desktop was measured from hiting enter on the grub menu until the kde desktop was up and running normally. Idem for the others. My tests slow that startup time for the kde Desktop was actually 6 seconds slower using the Con Kolivas's patch-2.6.13-8-suse-ck5 . ########### For info ########### linux:/usr/src/linux # bzcat /media/usbdisk/patch-2.6.13-8-suse-ck5.bz2 | patch -p1 patching file arch/i386/Kconfig patching file arch/i386/pci/common.c patching file arch/i386/pci/i386.c patching file arch/ia64/configs/tiger_defconfig patching file arch/ia64/configs/zx1_defconfig patching file arch/ppc/configs/common_defconfig patching file arch/ppc/configs/pmac_defconfig patching file crypto/cipher.c patching file Documentation/filesystems/proc.txt patching file Documentation/sysctl/vm.txt patching file drivers/char/rtc.c patching file drivers/ide/pci/cmd64x.c patching file drivers/ide/pci/hpt34x.c patching file drivers/ide/pci/hpt366.c patching file drivers/media/video/Kconfig patching file drivers/net/forcedeth.c patching file drivers/net/sungem.c patching file drivers/net/sunhme.c patching file drivers/pci/rom.c patching file drivers/pci/setup-bus.c patching file drivers/scsi/aacraid/aachba.c patching file drivers/usb/serial/ftdi_sio.c patching file fs/compat_ioctl.c patching file fs/jfs/inode.c patching file fs/pipe.c patching file fs/proc/array.c patching file fs/proc/base.c patching file include/asm-i386/page.h patching file include/linux/fs.h patching file include/linux/init_task.h patching file include/linux/ioprio.h patching file include/linux/mmzone.h patching file include/linux/sched.h patching file include/linux/swap.h patching file include/linux/sysctl.h patching file include/linux/writeback.h patching file include/net/compat.h patching file init/Kconfig patching file kernel/exit.c patching file kernel/Kconfig.hz patching file kernel/sched.c patching file kernel/sysctl.c patching file Makefile patching file mm/Makefile patching file mm/mempolicy.c patching file mm/page_alloc.c patching file mm/page-writeback.c patching file mm/swap.c patching file mm/swap_prefetch.c patching file mm/swap_state.c patching file mm/vmscan.c patching file net/compat.c patching file net/core/filter.c patching file net/ipv4/ip_fragment.c patching file net/ipv4/netfilter/ipt_MASQUERADE.c patching file net/ipv4/raw.c patching file net/ipv6/raw.c patching file net/socket.c Makefile OLD: VERSION = 2 PATCHLEVEL = 6 SUBLEVEL = 13 EXTRAVERSION = NAME=Woozy Numbat VERSION = 2 PATCHLEVEL = 6 SUBLEVEL = 13 EXTRAVERSION = -ck5 NAME=Cognac Woozy Numbat
Hello all This is a follow up on an earlier posting I made today. I tried applying Con Kolivas' patch-2.6.13-8-suse-ck5.bz tonight on my home machine (it is a home made smp xp-2600 athlon box) that's running RC1. When I tried applying Con Kolivas' patch-2.6.13-8-suse-ck5.bz, I got alot of messages to the effect that a patch had already been applied (not so surprising I guess as I had already done an apt-get dist-upgrade a few days ago and I was running a compiled kernel of the day 20050914161152. As a result: - I decided to redo a apt-get dist-upgrade to get and test today's kernel of the day 20050919180106. - I did just that then I compiled and measured kde, openOffice, Firefox and konqueror startup times: Here are the results: #################### default RC1 #### kernel.20050919180106 startup till desktop ### 59 ############# 65 openOffice ############# 7 ############## 6 Firefox ################ 4 ############## 4 konqueror ############## < 2 ############ < 2 Note : Firefox is the Deer Park Beta 1 version, OpenOffice is the lastest (stock) version 1.9.128 Conclusion: None (I guess I am just spinning my wheels), it does seem clear though that the new SUSE OSS stock kernels are pretty fast out of the box and already well optimized when compared to a version compiled on and for the my machine's own arch. Thanks SUSE. Things are looking good and getting better. Keep up the good work. # my wish list I wish I could get decent usb transfert rates to my usb key for when I load it up before heading off to the office each morning. (current transfert rates are normally around 6-10 k/sec) James
Just finished installing the Slick 1 cd install...ran into a few issues on the laptop I installed it on...first off..when attempting to "install more software" I get the following error: An error occurred while loading http://klik.atekon.de?from=profile: Unknown host klik.atekon.de Additionally Yast online update appears to be broken because none of the sites will let me download updates....server location is "http://ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/suse/suse/" for example and the error is: error HTTP return code: 404 (URL: http://ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/suse/suse/i386/update/10.0-OSS/patches/di...)

No updates available? Should probably point to ..... http://ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/suse/suse/i386/update/10.0/patches/ Andreas
Oh yes .... Any positive feedback? Seeing I only had 22 downloads in the past 24 hours I am kind of worrying this SLICK is not what users want ...... I am withdrawing this release and wait until 10.0 is out an more people can join the development effort .... if anyone wants access to the iso, please ask me directly .... Cheers Andreas

I think nothing has changed - I have not seen any comments that this is a wrong direction. There might just have been so many releases/so quickly that not so many users can stay in pace :) -Jukka
Yes I think that was the reason why so few downloads. (In my case I have
downloaded every single beta and the super 1 CD (24 CDs in total)). And
after one has SUSE perfectly running on the PC its hard to format it again
and install a new version.
A good thing would be to have some instructions on how to upgrade our
current SuSE 10 to have all the new SLICK features and optimized packages
using APT perhaps.
David.

Yep .. I call this rolling thunder ;) Klik is down anyhow and a few little bugs and issues with legal need to be sorted and I actually prefer at this stage to wait for the final release and then follow the mega hype of 10.0 up with a rolling thunder of development releases like slick. I am just not 100% sure if I can really include all the codecs from packman onto the SLICK CD or if I just leave it up to the user to do that using Kynaptic? I am also very busy atmo and am quite involved on the ground. I hope this is OK. Andreas
