Hello all I downloaded Con Kolivas' patch-2.6.13-8-suse-ck5.bz yesterday and compiled it into a RC1 kernel (on a P4 1.6 GHz 256 Megs) I then measured kde, openOffice, Firefox and konqueror startup times two or three times using each kernel Here are the results: ########################### Con Kelvas ###################### RC1 Standard Kernel #################### (2.6.13-ck5-8-default) ########## (2.6.13-8-default) startup till desktop ###### 76 ############################## 70 openOffice ################ 14 ############################## 15 Firefox ################### 6 ############################### 7 konqueror ################# 2 ############################### 2 Note: Startup till kde desktop was measured from hiting enter on the grub menu until the kde desktop was up and running normally. Idem for the others. My tests slow that startup time for the kde Desktop was actually 6 seconds slower using the Con Kolivas's patch-2.6.13-8-suse-ck5 . ########### For info ########### linux:/usr/src/linux # bzcat /media/usbdisk/patch-2.6.13-8-suse-ck5.bz2 | patch -p1 patching file arch/i386/Kconfig patching file arch/i386/pci/common.c patching file arch/i386/pci/i386.c patching file arch/ia64/configs/tiger_defconfig patching file arch/ia64/configs/zx1_defconfig patching file arch/ppc/configs/common_defconfig patching file arch/ppc/configs/pmac_defconfig patching file crypto/cipher.c patching file Documentation/filesystems/proc.txt patching file Documentation/sysctl/vm.txt patching file drivers/char/rtc.c patching file drivers/ide/pci/cmd64x.c patching file drivers/ide/pci/hpt34x.c patching file drivers/ide/pci/hpt366.c patching file drivers/media/video/Kconfig patching file drivers/net/forcedeth.c patching file drivers/net/sungem.c patching file drivers/net/sunhme.c patching file drivers/pci/rom.c patching file drivers/pci/setup-bus.c patching file drivers/scsi/aacraid/aachba.c patching file drivers/usb/serial/ftdi_sio.c patching file fs/compat_ioctl.c patching file fs/jfs/inode.c patching file fs/pipe.c patching file fs/proc/array.c patching file fs/proc/base.c patching file include/asm-i386/page.h patching file include/linux/fs.h patching file include/linux/init_task.h patching file include/linux/ioprio.h patching file include/linux/mmzone.h patching file include/linux/sched.h patching file include/linux/swap.h patching file include/linux/sysctl.h patching file include/linux/writeback.h patching file include/net/compat.h patching file init/Kconfig patching file kernel/exit.c patching file kernel/Kconfig.hz patching file kernel/sched.c patching file kernel/sysctl.c patching file Makefile patching file mm/Makefile patching file mm/mempolicy.c patching file mm/page_alloc.c patching file mm/page-writeback.c patching file mm/swap.c patching file mm/swap_prefetch.c patching file mm/swap_state.c patching file mm/vmscan.c patching file net/compat.c patching file net/core/filter.c patching file net/ipv4/ip_fragment.c patching file net/ipv4/netfilter/ipt_MASQUERADE.c patching file net/ipv4/raw.c patching file net/ipv6/raw.c patching file net/socket.c Makefile OLD: VERSION = 2 PATCHLEVEL = 6 SUBLEVEL = 13 EXTRAVERSION = NAME=Woozy Numbat VERSION = 2 PATCHLEVEL = 6 SUBLEVEL = 13 EXTRAVERSION = -ck5 NAME=Cognac Woozy Numbat
