[opensuse-marketing] Elevator pitches
Dear marketeers, For those among us (esp our ambassadors) who frequently talk to people about openSUSE, I have drafted up three elevator pitches for respectively beginner, advanced and pro linux users to explain to them why THEY should check out openSUSE. The pitches can be found on http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Why_openSUSE and I'd be very happy with improvements. In case they are obvious, please just edit the wiki (that's what it is for) to make sure we don't end up in huge discussions about minor details* ;-) Thanks, Jos PS you are all aware of the presentations in GIT, yes? Here: https://gitorious.org/opensuse-artwork/opensuse-artwork/trees/master/slides I know they are hard to download but you can get it by cloning it to your hard drive. There is a mirror where you can download stuff right away from Bruno: http://linux.ioda.net/openSUSE/git/opensuse-artwork/slides/ *anyone who hasn't read bikeshed.com should do so NOW :D

lol awesome. I added a little 'key points' line to summarize in just a few words (reminders of the main topics, to write on your hand :) ) I think a couple of specific development tools could be mentioned in the FOSS developer section, but didn't know what to put - please add something you think suitable? GIT, Anjuta, Eclipse, OSC? Mono... :P ? Also would a Sysadmin section be useful addition? ( Tony, I'm looking at you! :) ) *getting on my bike now....* cheers Helen -- IRC: helen_au helen.south@opensuse.org helensouth.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

At LinuxTag I was challenged by a user to say 'why openSUSE over Kubuntu?' and had a think about a better answer than 'our KDE is better'. The answer I gave him was that openSUSE is a project which plays nicer with its neighbours, so by using and contributing to openSUSE you are benefitting Free Software generally, not just Ubuntu. Is that a fair answer? Do should we include such comparisons in our elevator pitches? That's a great answer and reminds me of when Jos pointed out that the word 'Linux' doesn't get a mention on the Ubuntu website. Though having said that, I'm never keen to disparage other distros, for a bunch of reasons that I won't ramble on about here. I usually prefer to focus on our positives without using comparison. How about adding something like 'openSUSE Gives Back' with a comment about contributing upstream? In a way the actual giving-back stuff tends to get a bit muddled up with general 'community' so a separate section in the 'more details' might be worthwhile. Possibly those sections could do with a little organizing, I'll try to take a look tomorrow if I get my work done. cheers Helen -- IRC: helen_au helen.south@opensuse.org helensouth.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

Actually, that's in the 2nd and 3rd elevator pitches. For those new to linux, it's not really relevant - we shouldn't bother them with the infighting/competition. But the 2nd and 3rd level (ppl who know linux and ppl who already contribute) should certainly be told about that. But again, if it's not in there clear enough, fix it, as I did have it in mind when writing.

I checked the elevator pitches. Some great improvements, thanks! Esp the 'key points' are awesome :D But when I tried to say them in 30 seconds, I discovered they are way too long. I should've tested them the first time I wrote them, sorry!!! I made new ones on top, which are really about 30-40 seconds. Very difficult to make a 30 sec openSUSE description but that is what they were supposed to be... Review them on http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Why_openSUSE Should we remove the long ones to clean up the page? I have also put them in the attached document and I want to print them on a4 and ship them with our event boxes to our ambassadors. So they can use them! It'd be nice if we could get translations for that. So the german people get german pitches, the French French ones etc. So who will send me a translated version of the attached document? xxx Jos

If we're at a booth, at the end of the newbie section, you can add: *You can bring your laptop with you and we'll help you install (dual boot or mono boot) openSUSE.* Of course if before you had a chance to demonstrate openSUSE (KDE or Gnome).
