This brings some progress. I installed libkmod2, then kmod. Now, when I run zypper install kernel-default-5.16.6... only one conflict is reported: "nothing provides 'suse-kernel-rpm-scriptlets' needed by the to be installed kernel-default-5.16.6... However, this does not seem to be the good way, because it reports a conflict with 'libkmod2 < 29-4'... and if I wish to go on it would uninstall about 100 components. So I guess a more complex update is required. I was able to mount the bootable USB flash disk at last. Changing directory to x86_64, I found there the file kmod-28-2... .rpm. Running (as root) zypper install kmod within that directory yields: (many complaints about non-accessible repositories)... 'kmod' is already installed. Package 'kmod' is not available in your repositories. Cannot reinstall ... Resolving package dependencies. Nothing to do. Nevertheless, when I mount the usb stick with the kernel rpm, running zypper install kernel-default-5.16.... rpm still yields the conflict with missing 'kmod-zstd'. The installation media is a bootable USB flash disk which cannot be mounted directly. I can only reboot to it, but then I am almost back where I was before. I think you are right, I did not take the good kernel, it must have been by my mistake. Having downloaded the one you point out, I am trying to install it via zypper again. Zypper complains again on missing internet connection, additionally it tells that "nothing provides 'kmod-zstd'.
