Although I did run into the secure boot error on my test, the problem I wanted to check here was different. I installed kernel-default from Kernel:stable but didn't see the symlink /boot/$name-$kver to (/usr)/lib/modules/$kver/$name created as what is outline by the discussion on opensuse-kernel mailing list, subject "Getting the kernel out of /boot". They work by rendering changes into a buffer and then presenting it on the output via a page flip. The wayland protocol allows clients to get notified when a frame got displayed, so that they can sync to the display and show smooth animations. Unfortunately it seems like virtual devices such as virtio-gpu do not handle vblank intervals, so even for an output which is configured to a 60Hz mode, the page flip completes pretty much immediately (<1ms). After the page flip, applications are notified that they can prepare the next frame and the cycle continues.
