Hi all, I just upgraded to KDE 3.2, and since then I have a problem with freetype2. My configuration: SuSE 8.1 XFree86-4.3.0-17 (8.1 update from freetype2-2.1.3-36 ftp.suse.com) Since the KDE upgrade I get a message window at KDE startup (before the splash screen appears) which says something like "kdeinit failed", and XFree86.0.log contains the following lines: kdeinit: relocation error: /usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3: undefined symbol: FT_Seek_Stream startkde: Could not start kdeinit. Check your installation. KDE comes up normally as it seems, and I didn't observe any problems up to now (besides the message itself). I found some hits in google with the same problem but other kde/freetype versions, but no real solution, besides updating SuSE Linux which I don't really want to do. With freetype2-2.0.9-84.i586.rpm (original version from SuSE 8.1) the kdeinit problem is gone, but then I face Xserver crashs on certain font related actions, e.g. when selecting fonts in kde, opera etc., or just running xfd -fn <any font>. So using freetype2-2.1.3-36 is the lesser of two evils. Is there anything I can do about it? Can I safely ignore this message? Regards Mario
Hi Mario, I had on 3.1.x already the same problem... It is a freetype error msg. KDE3.2/qt3 is compiled against XFree 4.2, freetype2-2.0.9 and pango 1.0.4. So just do the same I did... Return to the roots (i.e. to the old Xfree and freetype, but leave the 4.3 resmgr installed). Then it will work without problem.. Regards, Udo Am Dienstag, 24. Thanks, I was afraid someone would say this. I don't like downgrading XFree86, so I'll just live with the error message at login until I encounter a more critical problem, which I didn't up to now. I searched google and there was one posting in some mailing list that in newer freetype2 versions some function names have been changed, like FT_Seek_Stream to FT_Stream_Seek, that's why the errors. It also said the new freetype2 versions contain a compatibility API, but for some reason it was not included in freetype2 for Intel based systems or so. Maybe I'll try to get my hands on the sources to fix this problem. Regards Mario
Yap, that's the FT_Seek_Stream to FT_Stream_Seek problem.... I did not want to cope with the sources, so I downgraded. Let's wait for Xfree 4.4 ! Maybe, Suse will compile it compatible to 8.1. It would be great !!! Udo

Gruss Axel.

Dear All Occasionally I have tried to compile various programs which are not available as rpm's for SuSE8.1. However, it rarely meets with success due to ./configure not finding the qt libraries. The following is typical output at the end of running configure: checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.0) (library qt-mt) not found. Please check your installation! For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log. Make sure that you have compiled Qt with thread support! Hi Udo Thanks for you comments. I'm using Suse 8.1, Kernel 2.4.19, kde 3.2, xf86 4.2, qt3 3.3.0. everything is generally running very well. I've not tried upgrading the kernel or Xfree. should I do that? rpm -q reports that qt3, qt3-devel and qt3-non-mt are all installed. However, I note that the missing library qt-mt mentioned in my initial mail is not found. I'm trying to compile LabPlot 1.2.3 http://staff.mbi-berlin.de/gerlach/Linux/LabPlot/ found on kde-apps.org website. Everything does seem to be more or less as it should be so I still do understand why it isn't compiling. Any other thoughts? John On Friday 27 Feb 2004 15:23, udo wrote:

Have you tried using "export QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt3" in your shell, before starting the compile? Also, do you have QT3 3.0 or greater installed? I believe it's just a matter of you pointing the configure to your QT3. Did you run /sbin/SuSEconfig after updating your KDE? Just some thoughts, maybe something will click. Dear Lee Thanks for your comments. I've just tried "export QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt3" but I still get the same error message. I've got the latest version of qt3 (3.3.0) and I always run SuSEconfig after updating any software. I've tried a number of configure options but so far they make no difference however, I agree it is probably just a matter of hitting on the right one the question is: which one?. If qt3 is installed properly, which I think it is, then shouldn't configure be able to find it by default? Any other ideas? Regards John On Friday 27 Feb 2004 15:30, BandiPat wrote:

Defenitively, your qt3 installation is somehow broken or you took the wrong source. I've just downloaded http://staff.mbi-berlin.de/gerlach/Linux/LabPlot/src/LabPlot-1.2.3.tar.gz and made a simple ./configure on my Suse 8.1: checking for Qt... libraries /usr/lib/qt3/lib, headers /usr/lib/qt3/include using -mt checking if Qt compiles without flags... no checking for moc... /usr/lib/qt3/bin/moc checking for uic... /usr/lib/qt3/bin/uic checking whether uic supports -L ... yes checking whether uic supports -nounload ... yes checking if Qt needs -ljpeg... no all is fine, ready for make. If you have the 8.1 qt3 really installed (release -47, non-mt release -49) then -from my point of view - it can be the source only. Udo P.S. don't upgrade the kernel or xfree unless you really know, what you are doing, i.e know how to cope with the issues that will show up.
I have all the qt libraries (release -47, non-mt release -49) installed as far as I can tell but it makes no difference. I still get the following output from ./configure: checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.1.0) (library qt-mt) not found. Please check your installation! For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log. Make sure that you have compiled Qt with thread support! I have also redownloaded the source to see if that makes any difference and it doesn't. Over the weekend I tried doing this exercise on my machine at home which has Suse 8.0. Curiously ./configure run Ok and it said I could run make. However, it didn't compile correctly, there seemed to be some missing -devel libraries associated with KDE which are do not seem to be available on my personal addition of Suse 8.0. So it was still not possible to obtain a running version. Can you check please if you can compile and install? On my suse8.1 machine I've tried a number of ./configure options telling it exactly where qt can be found but it makes no difference. I wonder if there is some incompatiblity with versions? For the time being I'll steer clear of upgrading the kernel and xfree. Thanks for help on this problem. Perhaps I need to wait till I've installed suse9.0 before I can get this to work properly. Lee I've got all these installed but ./configure still doesn't find qt3 even if I run export or use configure options to tell it where the qt3 libraries can be found. I've installed KDE 3.2 and the qt libraries (and all my other upgrades for that matter) using synaptic from the ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/ site. One thing I note is that on this site the kdenetwork files for kde 3.2 have not yet been upated to 3.2. I never used --force to install I only use the default synaptic settings. thanks for help on this but it looks a dead end at present. John On Saturday 28 Feb 2004 03:36, BandiPat wrote:
