[opensuse-gnome] GNOME:Factory at 3.1.5
Hi Gnomies! I just wanted to give you a heads up that last night, with the help of mighty Darix, GNOME:Factory has been updated to version 3.1.5, which is the latest release on the way to 3.2. As always, 3.1.x is considered 'unstable', but in my experience it works very well. We will keep the packages for a few days in GNOME:Factory and hope to hear of things breaking since the last update, sort those breaks out and will forward the stack to openSUSE:Factory after that. There are some changes on packaging level, coming from ABI and API breaks. The noteworthy ones are (Mails with more details will follow for each of them): * gnome-menus => Version 3.1.5 is ABI and API incompatible to the so far included version 3.0.1. A compatibility package called gnome-menus-legacy has been introduced. * python-gobject (this is currenlty in GNOME:Factory AND also already in devel:languages:python): python-gobject 2.90.x (on the road to 3.0) changed from the 'old' gobject bindings to pure gobject-introspection based bindings. Any application can only use one kind of binding at once. As a migration path, the old version has been renamed to python-gobject2 (as it was once in the past.. many packages still buildrequire python-gobject2-devel). python-gobject is the new gi-based binding. Let's get the test systems up and rolling.. let's make sure everything rocks our world! I upgraded last night and on startup I get the message that GNOME Shell won't be starting, and I'm sent to the GDM login. Where is the best place to begin the diagnosis? Hi, The best start is checking the .xsession-errors in the users home directory. Very often there are hints on what went wrong there. One thing that MIGHT be the issue is the accidental update of gconf ahead of 3.1.5 (to 3.1.6) which was breaking a few things. That was reverted this morning back to 3.1.5. Hopefully the build is being published soon enough there (But this must not explicitly be your issue...) Yes, I still see 3.1.6. Mike

Reappearing is expected... but as it did not help, we're at least aware that not this part went wrong. As OBS is still busy rebuilding the prj after the gconf revert, I branched it off and created a project only with gconf for you [0] Like that we can at least try to downgrade your machine again to gconf 3.1.5, in the hope that we're on the right track there. Okay, I succeeded in upgrading to gconf2-3.1.5-82.1.i586 by telling it to ignore the dependency (my mistake about x86_64 on this machine). It looks like I upgraded from 2.32, so 3.1.6 didn't actually install? Here's a new .xsession-errors. Mike

I'm getting confused... Is your machine running Factory? Coz if so, there has been gnome 3.1.4 in for a long time. If you're not on Factory (which GNOME:Factory targets), then we probably ran in a bunch of incompatibilities, which are not really surprising. Can you paste your list of repositories (zypper lr -u -p) This should give an insight on how the setup might look like. Also, "zypper verify" should not give any errors. Ok, your repository list does not match: openSUSE 11.4 as base, with GNOME:Factory on top of that. The gconf downgrade should no longer be needed: GNOME:Factory built and published (with the exception of two packages, which are not of high importance). The libxml failure for example is a result of that: G:F Does not contain all the libraries you'd need on top of 11.4, as the base system is 'outdated' compared to what gnome 3.1.5 is built against. There are very likely more packages that did not update to 3.1.x in your situation then. I'd suggest you to either: a) Revert back to openSUSE 11.4 + GNOME 3 (remove the gnome:factory repos) then "zypper dup" to 'revert' down to gnome 3.0.2 b) Remove the openSUSE 11.4 based repository and switch to Factory. Beware though: Factory is development repositories. At any moment they may or may not work successfully. Of course we strive to keep disruption minimal, but without building packages and publishing them we can't test them neither. Always be conscious about updates you apply (also valid on stable version of course). Both those solution are supposedly resolving all your currently perceived issues. Forgoing Factory, you need to drop all the repositories with 11.4 in their path. Most imprtantly probably are the base repositories (oss / nos-oss) which need to be Factory as wel. http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Factory Should have the information to get you started on Factory (currently openSUSE 12.1 MS+/-4) Dominique -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org

FWIW, GNOME:Factory now has a mix of GNOME 3.1.90 and 3.1.91, with most of 3.1.91 landing very soon (also, gnome-control-center and gdm are still from 3.1.5, but I'll get that fixed soon). Video now works -- the nouveau issue was a version mismatch from the jobermayr Factory repo, fixed by downloading the correct RPM for my kernel in Epiphany, saying yes I want to install and accepting the dependency.
GNOME Factory looks great! I'll play with it for a while.
Next issue: NetworkManager 0.9.0-112.1 fails to start, so I switched back to manual configuration with YaST.
Milestone 5 has stabilized on my desktop system, except:
- Epiphany segfaults on launch
Everything is working now, out of the box, with the Build 296 iso. (I too had to install gnome-utils manually.)
Can someone file a bug about gnome-utils missing? Else, we'll forget to investigate.
Will 11.4 be updated to GNOME 3.2?
As stated in the mail I just sent, it's likely :-) Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+help@opensuse.org
