These contributions then need to get verified by the membership committee. This verification today is tedious, and we would like to have a system that makes it easy to verify contributions across the various areas of the project. In addition we would like to use the same mechanism to enable recognition of project contributions by existing members. (kalenz) Partner organization: openSUSE.org Description: We should draw a clear distinction: the KDE control panel should be about the desktop environment only (local user level only), and all system (root-level) settings are YaST territory. This would mean: clean up the KDE code to remove anything that 'invades'. Moderate version: have a switch somewhere that says: "Allow access to system settings from KDE control panel (asking for root password)", switched off by default . It should be there for the benefit of KDE users familiar with these tools, not as the default thing in the face of openSUSE newcomers. Business case (Partner benefit): openSUSE.org: Having two control panels (KDE/YaST) is confusing and unsafe. Several threads in the forum address this issue, and several items on openFATE have appeared, suggesting that we "merge" the two. A historical understanding is needed: not all KDE users are on openSUSE; YaST is the central root-level control panel of openSUSE (and not only in the KDE environment). The KDE control panel started as a desktop environment settings menu, but is now growing as the KDE developers try to build an all-purpose system control panel, mainly targeted at desktop/mobile users. We can't blame the KDE folks for wanting to do this. However, in openSUSE, it creates a situation that is: * Confusing for newcomers, because there are two control panels and the distinction is blurred; * Insecure as things scale, because local-user and root settings are thrown in together. The distinction of a local-user privilege "desktop settings" control panel (i.e., KDE settings) and a super-user "system settings" control panel (i.e., YaST) is both sensible for security reasons, as it prevents light-hearted use of the root password, and helpful for newcomers, as it clearly marks the line between local and system settings. The current combination of: 1) Allowing KDE control panel to access system-level settings, displaying only the Windows-style "password to confirm" dialogue, 2) Root password = local user password by default openSUSE installation setting*, 3) "Everybody Hates Apper" --> and yet it runs by default, is dangerous and stupid. * this is not a security violation in the stricter sense, however, it fails to teach newcomers an appreciation of the meaning and importance of the "root user" on a Unix-like system (and by implication, becomes insecure). -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/314842

However I believe that we should offer only hash values of algorithms generally considered as safe like sha256 and sha512 here whereby I would prefer sha512 as the stronger hashing method. Historically FUSE had to bring its own command, because traditional umount refuses umounting of mounts that are not in /etc/fstab for non-privileged users. But now that FUSE has become mainstream, I think it is time to integrate it better and get rid of the need for "fusermount -u". So my proposal is to either add the implementation of the "fusermount -u" functionality to mount, or let it execute "fusermount -u" as a subprocess for FUSE mountpoints. As root can already use umount for FUSE mount points, it probably doesn't need more than skipping the /etc/fstab test when umount is called on a FUSE mountpoint that is owned by the calling user. -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/310710

In order to subscribe to mailinglists I have to confirm my mail address for each list individually though. I make my living from Novell/openSuSE products. - it distrubs me everytime I sense a slight lack of quality control in the product(s). I use SLES10/11 for professional deployments - if I can... Many times SLES10/11 will lack libraries that are needed for running various common web-applications. Thus giving me no choice but to leave SLES(n) and go for a stripped down openSuSE installation that works... On the openSuSE side, it disturbs me that (using the KDE desktop) the Knetworkmanager or whatever it's calles these days is still not stable or plain just functioning. If one thows Ubunto at just about any laptop, the wireless just works. In openSuSE, not so. Or is not stable or is not quite polished. This should be corrected. In general I'm left with a feeling that in stead of more features one should concentrate on getting the present ones to work properly :-) Media is still a problem. How come that Ubuntu will show live-tv, openSuSE will not. Not so disturbing to me, I can fix it. But when I'm plugging openSUSE to friends...it becomes an issue. The YaST interface to CUPS isn't quite there yet although much improved over the last couple of versions :-) I wish I could contribute, alas, my programming skills are not goog enough. Sorry.
