Other GNU/Linux distributions like Debian/Ubuntu display the Grub boot menu when you power on the computer after hibernate with GNU/Linux, and booting into MS Windows (or other) is offered. There has been resisitence in the distribution community to switching boot loaders, but this stalemate isn't going to go away. The code itself isn't well written or well maintained. Adding a new feature involves jumping through a lot of hoops that may or may not work even if you manage to work around all the runtime limitations. For example, a fs implementation has a static buffer it can use for memory management. It's only 32k. For complex file systems, or even a simple journaled file system, we run into problems (like the reiserfs taking forever to load bug) because we don't have enough memory to do block mapping for the journal so it needs to scan it for every metadata read. (Yeah, really.) GRUB v2 has a cleaner design, is modular, and it has support for multiple architectures including i386, x86-64, and powerpc. Support for ia64 is said to be forthcoming. EFI support is already there. More importantly, it supports far more file systems and has native MD RAID and LVM support. Adding support for a new file system is much easier, cleaner, and has fewer limitations than with GRUB 0.97. The interface in general with TB3 on openSUSE 11.2 actually looks fine using the default theme, but KDE file and helper application dialogs would be a big improvement. Even better if this could be included with the 4.3.5 online update or the possible openSUSE 11.2 KDE4.4 respin that I've heard rumours of. Use Case: Take my parents, using a KDE setup but with Firefox and Thunderbird as the two main non-KDE apps installed, for whom the existing GTK file dialogs completely throw them every time they need to pick a file attachment, or to open/save attachments sent to them. It is the only place on their system where they encounter non-KDE dialogs and they are confused. Initial partition layout: sda1: fat32 (empty), sda2: ext3 linux /, etc... The first thing I did was install openSUSE 11.1. YaST correctly identified fat32 partition and wrote the respective line to fstab. Then, I installed Vista on sda1. The problem with Vista is that it won't install to fat32, it needs ntfs. So, it converted sda1 to ntfs and installed ok. Now, the problem is that fstab in openSUSE still contained "vfat" as filesystem type. KDE4 wouldn't open in from Konqueror, etc... I tried to make YaST re-learn the type of sda1, so it would write the correct line to fstab, since I didn't remember what are the openSUSE-default options for ntfs-3g. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to do this. I think this will affect lots of people who, for example, had XP and decided to switch to Vista. Also, since openSUSE doesn't allow formatting to ntfs, this will also affect all the people who install Linux on a clean disk (reserving a space for Windows with fat32 partition), and then install XP or Vista, converting the filesystem to ntfs in the process. Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install openSUSE on a clean disk, making the first partition fat32. 2. Convert the first partition to ntfs via third-party tool. 3. Try to use the drive from openSUSE as an average "joe the user". I filed it as a bug https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=524784 and was told that this was a feature request - "The partitioner does assume that the enties in fstab are correct and does not try to fix them. Nevertheless there are still devices not supported by the kernel. If a user compiles a kernel module by himself, he has to redo this step after each kernel update (if he is aware at all, that this step is needed). My idea was to install kernel-source, kernel-syms, gcc and make with each standard installation and to define a standard directory for the source code of kernel modules, e.g /usr/src/updates. When a Kernel Update is done, the system looks on boot in /usr/src/updates for directories and does there a 'make' and 'make install'. (build a kmp-package ?) Currently they touch "run-gtk" and the next SuSEconfig run will execute the script. But the problem is, that only YaST2 calls SuSEconfig afterwards, zypper and rpm do not. As result, if you install gtk based applications the first time with zypper or rpm, this ones are often broken and don't work. The workaround is, that all this applications get a %run_suseconfig macro. This is very error prone, and makes the installation slower than doing it right from the beginning and let the post install of this packages, which really installs a plugin, register it correct. As all the bug reports with SLE11 SP1 shows, the current solution is not maintainable in any ways. We need to get ride of this hack.
