[opensuse-factory] Warning: Issues with latest libzypp
I should have know better than update libzypp during the weekend. Weekend updates don't have a good reputation as that most of the time things are breaking, which seems also the case with the libzypp update. Starting now YaST software manager, directly gives me a whole bunch of packages that are going to be installed. And I didn'*t even selected anything. Packages like Texlive, apparmor, britty, libreoffice. Even after removing all the patterns-openSUSE packages, this big selection keeps on coming back. So don't update libzypp/zypper or be very careful when running an update through YaST. It seems that running just zypper functions as expected. Hmmm, you should have at least mentioned 3 things: the version # of libzypp; version of openSUSE you are running; and whether you are talking about 32-bit or 64-bit version of your oS. I am running 64-bit 13.1 and I am not having any hassles at all with version libzypp-13.9.0-10.1. My 'complete' system is: Using openSUSE 13.1, KDE 4.12.2 & kernel 3.13.3-1 on a system with- AMD FX 8-core 3.6/4.2GHz processor 16GB PC14900/1866MHz Quad Channel Corsair "Vengeance" RAM Gigabyte AMD3+ m/board; Gigabyte nVidia GTX660 OC 2GB DDR5 GPU However, what I AM finding is that zypper INSISTS on trying to install kernel-desktop-3.11.10-7.1 as a NEW package when, as you can see above, I am (already) using kernel 3.13.x......... I DON'T have anything 3.11.x installed! Another reason why I showed what my system consisted of. Don't try to be a smart-arse. If you want to carry on with this then take it to private mail. Please, Basil, calm down. Look at the mail address of this mail list. It says: «opensuse-factory at opensuse.org». Questions asked here always refer to the factory version (with limited exceptions). Questions about 13.1 here are off-topic. So, Raymond does not need to say what release he is talking about, because we know he is talking about factory. To close this round of emails, I found out that libzypp got enhanced or fixed and now it will start searching and wanting to install all the recommends for the packages that are already installed on the system. Validation with another user gave me this indication and setting the Setting in YaST Software Manager to ignore the recommends of the already installed packages resolved this issue. Still I don't get where he got some of the packages from, but at least things went back to normal. Sorry for the email flood :) Regards Raymond -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

To end the thread, I resolved the issue. It seems that the latest libzypp got some fixed with regards to the recommends for already installed packages. Validating with someone who didn't see my issue, learned me that I have to set the option now that yast should ignore the recommends for the already installed packages on the system. I never had this option set (guess still the default setup for YaST) and it has always worked fine in the past until the last update. Sorry for the noise. Aha, Recommends, again. But that brings up an interesting situation: zypper/libzypp has defaulted to recommends=yes for many months already (practically forever), so even on openSUSE 13.1, one can observe: # zypper up --recommends Loading repository data... Reading installed packages... The following NEW package is going to be installed: libunwind-devel 1 new package to install. Overall download size: 348.7 KiB. After the operation, additional 2.3 MiB will be used. Continue? This has worked already for ages. I get indeed when installing new packages that zypper or YaST selects all the recommends. Depending on what it recommends, I do somethings deselect some of them. But in the past it never checked the already installed packages for any missing recommended packages and proposed them for installation. The behavior that we now see when in YaST that option to ignore these already installed packages. Where do you specify this in 13.1? Prior it went into /etc/zypp/zypp.conf but there is now /etc/zypp/multiversion.d/ which is empty and no "multi..." entry/section in zypp.conf. Did I miss the answer to the question where to specify the multiversions in 13.1? I still have it in /etc/zypp/zypp.conf. However the file date is 30 Sep 2013, so I am not sure if newer version of this configuration file coming with libzypp still have that section or not. As that I adjusted that file, it was never overwritten. But it still works as expected Raymond -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, I know this and knowing which version of libzypp and on which architecture you are having trouble with must be of help to some people who are as 'advanced' users as you are, or more so. When I finally manage to install the fledgling parts of 13.2 I will know that the libzypp you mention above may be flakey.
whether you are talking about 32-bit or 64-bit version of your oS. 64-bit, but I am not sure if this is not affecting 32-bit as well.
I can see that there is a 32-bit version of M0 available so those who are trying it out will come back with an answer I am sure. BC -- A civilisation is judged by how it treats the most vulnerable.
