[opensuse-factory] root-password need to add a WLAN-Connection?
Hi, I installed the latest openSUSE 12.1 Release. If I want to add a new WLAN Connection in the KNetworkmanager he asked for a root password. Is this a bug in policykit or is this a feature? Also there is a Proxysettingwindow who appears randomly. It mades no matter if I insert the root-Password. It disappears seconds later or immediately. Jan I see both of these behaviors also.
The 2nd one seems to be the new Apper program trying to do a zypper ref ... ? Is it going to prompt for root every time? -johnm -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
First only one time per session if i want to edit a connection or setup a new one. The second every time. In many cases i can't insert the root password because the window dissapeard to quickly. Am Montag, 14. November 2011, 16:39:44 schrieb John McInnes:

That's intentional, network connections are system settings after all. The authentication should be only needed once when you create the connection though. If there are prompts when you activate a connection it would be a bug.

That sounds like a bug in the app that handles proxy settings. cu Ludwig -- (o_ Ludwig Nussel //\ V_/_ http://www.suse.de/ SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Jeff Hawn, Jennifer Guild, Felix Imendörffer, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Okay, its a feature. To activate the connection I dont need the root password.

That could be a problem for a "corporate" notebook. If a user wants to take it home (or elsewhere) and connect via WiFi, what happens if they don't have the root password? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
Hi,
As long as I (might) understand the reasons for this change, it will
be nice to know how can it be deactivated. Definitely I don't want to
have to enter root password everytime I need to connect to a new WiFi
network.
Kind regards,
Eduard

Just uncheck the "available to all users" box in nm-connetion-editor and you won't need root. -- Stefan Seyfried "Dispatch war rocket Ajax to bring back his body!" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Hi,
I could agree with you. However, let me point that right now this is
just no the way how openSUSE works: every adminstration action needs
root password to be entered (i.e. laucnching YAST), so to it's
coherent that WiFi configuration at system level works the same way.
This is different to how other (Ubuntu...?) distros with sudo work:
they usually ask for the user's password, not root's. Althoug I guess
this only works for "admin"-type users, not normal ones.
I really don't know the pros & cons of this behaviour, though.
Kind regards

Hi Roger, There are two issues... which I think you mix. you should be able to add wifi connections limited to the user as far as I remember... if something prevents you is a bug or security team paranoia. the problem that I see. when the wireless disconnects from a systemwide wifi connection asks you for the root password to reconnect. usually esc and it connects... I think this is a bug...
