The browser is immaterial and dropping squid and running just NAT does not encounter this behaviour.

Then it must be to do with the way you have squid configured. Would you post your /etc/squid/squid.conf file, either to me personally or on-list. Various of the RBCGFL's, including those involving RM, want to direct all browser traffic through their own proxies. By default squid only sends HTTP requests to parent caches. There is generally no point in directing HTTPS to any other cache, either parent or peer.
