[Bug 1006200] New: Weird (misleading?) package download message during install
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1006200 Bug ID: 1006200 Summary: Weird (misleading?) package download message during install Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.2 Hardware: x86-64 OS: SUSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation Assignee: yast2-maintainers@suse.de Reporter: nwr10cst-oslnx@yahoo.com QA Contact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:49.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/49.0 Build Identifier: I'm reporting this, as requested in http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2016-10/msg00514.html Install used the DVD installer (for RC1). I did not add any online repos. There was an ethernet connection during the install. The install went about as expected. All packages seemed to be installed. Then the installer was presumably running post-install scripts, so there was a period of no screen activity (the disk was busy). At this stage, the progress bar (upper of the two progress bars) listed "kaddressbook5", which was presumably the last package that was installed. After that, I saw messages about running "yudit" (if I recall correctly). And then the upper progress bar gave details of downloading "kaddressbook5". This was evidently a network download, because it gave speeds typical of network downloads. Shortly after that, there was a message about network configuration. My best guess is that the "kaddressbook5" was bogus, perhaps a left-over string from install. In previous installs (Tumbleweed or 42.1 or 13.2) I would have expected a message about downloading release-notes to test the network. I'm guessing that was what was really happening, but the message was incorrectly listing "kaddressbook5". Apart from that, the install went well. Note that I have done three installs of 42.2 RC1 (on 3 different computers). And this happened for all three installs. I'm pretty sure that it also happened for Beta3, though I was not looking as carefully at that time. I'll attach Yast logs after completing this report. The email list ask for a list of software that I installed. I didn't write it down. So this is from memory and might be incomplete: Desktop selection: KDE Also selected Gnome (both patterns), XFCE (both patterns), base development pattern, yakuake, epiphany, kernel-devel, dd_rescue, aria2c, fvwm2, dar, lynx, links, mc, mutt, whois and probably a few others. Reproducible: Always -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I am always using the "detail" tab. I switch to that as soon as I can during the install. It makes sense that I am really seeing a metadata download. There's about the right amount of activity showing for that. It's just that it always says it is downloading "kaddressbook5". So probably a bad message buffer somewhere. I'm not sure about the video recording. I am not setup for using virtualization. I have always done bare metal installs. So I would have a steep learning curve to set that up. And maybe it doesn't happen under virtualization. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Both installing from an ISO on USB stick (only). Both without any custom package selections and opting for the KDE desktop. I was mainly viewing the detail tab, I did switch between views a bit, but the installs ended while I was viewing details. In the case of the PC, the last package, the one that repeated, was libstorage-ruby (can't recall the details of the VirtualBox install). In both cases the installer did this long enough for me to consider hitting reset - perhaps a minute or more. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1006200 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1006200#c9 --- Comment #9 from Neil Rickert <nwr10cst-oslnx@yahoo.com> --- Another note on this. I watched the install of 42.2 RC2 more closely. I still saw bogus messages for kaddressbook5. The messages showed up when the last line in the main information panel was: ---> Saving the software manager configuration So this is consistent with it actually downloading repo metadata. There's probably some string that isn't being properly initialized, resulting in a wrong message for the upper progress bar. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Maybe I'll just tell bugzilla to clear that. Hmm, I'm a bit surprised that there's a box to clear the NEEDINFO instead of to say that I am providing that info. Is bugzilla confused? I'm also surprised that some people are not seeing this. I have seen it on every install since I first reported. This includes a Tumbleweed install (of Snapshot20161128). I should note that I do click on the "details" tab (rather than "slide show" or other) while watching the install proceed. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I am still seeing the problem. It showed up in an install of openSUSE 15.0 Build 65.1. The download message was for "pattern gnome-gnome-imaging". I have also noticed, with several recent installs, that this problem does not show up in a KVM install. It only occurs in a bare-metal install. Perhaps this is why people are finding it hard to reproduce and document. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have also noticed, with several recent installs, that this problem does not show up in a KVM install. It only occurs in a bare-metal install.
It turns out that I was mistaken. It occurred to me that all of my KVM installs have been from an iso (virtual DVD), while all of my bare metal installs have used a USB flash drive, with the DVD installer written to that USB drive. So I managed to do a KVM install from a USB. And, with that install, the problem did show up. I paused the VM at that point and took a screen shot. I have uploaded the screenshot and will shortly upload the Yast logs for that install. In the screenshot, the main information panel shows "saving the software manager configuration". Below that is a line where it shows as "Downloading patterns-kde-kde". When I do the same kind of KVM install from an iso, that lower line just says "Downloading" and does not say what is being downloaded (probably repo metadata). Installing from a USB, it instead says it is downloading whatever was the last package previously installed. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

(I changed the bug to say 15.1, but it also happens on Tumbleweed). As previously mentioned, this happens when I install using a USB for the installer. It does not happen when I install directly from a DVD. My install today was using a USB (made from the DVD installer iso). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1006200 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1006200#c19 --- Comment #19 from Neil Rickert <nwr10cst-oslnx@yahoo.com> --- I am happy to note that this bug appears to have been fixed, at least in Tumbleweed. I tried an install of Tumbleweed 20190502 today. And the message for setting up the software manager now appears in a popup, and it lists the actual download URL. I have tested this installing both with a DVD and with the installer on a USB drive. In both cases, the correct messages now show in that Yast2 popup. I don't know whether it is also fixed in Leap 15.1. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
