[Bug 597596] New: Compiz breaks gnome desktop in oS 11.3 M5
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=597596 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=597596#c0 Summary: Compiz breaks gnome desktop in oS 11.3 M5 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Milestone 5 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Compiz AssignedTo: bnc-team-compiz@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: carlos.e.r@opensuse.org QAContact: ories@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- * Windows do not have the colored bar on the top with minicons (like the 'X' to close the window). * Keys like "alt-F2" to call commands are ignored. * Keys like Fn-Print-screen are ignored. * Commands typed on an xterm are printed in greek letters. No, I do not have screenshot as printscreen capture does not work. The typed command works and prints correctly, though. * When I move the mouse, icons and entries are highlighted, as if the button was pressed. * gnome control panel entries do not redraw till I move the mouse all over the window. Everything works the moment I disable compiz. System has been just installed, this is first use, with 11.3 M5 i586 (hardware is x64 but M5-x64 has been reported broken). At least should compiz be turned off by default in 11.3 if the problem is not fixed in the final release. Maybe a option of a different/older kernel version should offered to intel graphic users?
Of course, if by the close-up the driver did not get stable enough to host compiz on an intel chip, the driver will be blacklisted and compiz will not start on those machines. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have also found and reported (Bug 605856) flickering problems during install of M6 - could it be related?
In both cases the video driver is probably causing an issue. Compiz is not running during the installation. @Stefan: Do you have any information regarding such issues with the Intel Drivers currently in M6? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hmm. During installation fbdev driver is still running. So this can't be the problem here. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

With Intel 915GM, a 1400x1050 display, openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 6, kernel 2.6.34-rc6-7-default (32 bit), GNOME 2.30 and compiz 0.8.6-1.6 also with compiz 0.8.6-1.6 from Factory
I have an equal problem with compiz turned on (and not if I turn the hole compiz off). I can live (and work) without 2-D and 3-D effects (although the fonts are not so sharp, too) so this problem is not critical for me. http://www.smolts.org/client/show/pub_d4e948b2-d2ab-4a3e-b251-516c10c404c3 intel 915GM WITHOUT compiz on (compiz has problems) #959581 - Pastie http://pastie.org/959581 Which seems to make sense if it is telling me that my VBIOS has not an entry for my screens resolution (1400x1050).
But compiz (with not advanced settings) works fine in my actualised openSUSE 11.2 with kernel 2.6.31.12-0.2-default on the same laptop/notebook.
intel 915GM (with compiz on and this seems to be in order) #959570 - Pastie http://pastie.org/959570 Is there any workaround for not fitting resolutions in the 11.2 which is not in the 11.3 M6/Factory? Or is that just because I have the old /home (form 10.x?) in the 11.2? I tried to edit the settings in 11.3 (resolution, framebuffer?) but sax2 (which I had used once upon a time (10.x?) ) did not work - brakes sometimes all my graphic output. Do you need more date? Which? Greetings Martin -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It seems to me the stable version of the linux kernel 2.6.34 [..] - wait till it is in the Kernel:/HEAD/Factory or Tried this but it did not help, Nor did the Milestone 7 work with compiz properly.
IV. Or should I try to install Ubuntu 10.4 (in place of Milestone 6) and post here if it works with my Samsung X20 1730 V / SX20S laptop?
This works fine but it runs only on linux kernel
But today I found this: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16068 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=589420 Could this bugreports/patches have a chance to do a change on this bug here? I'm refering to this repository: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/Compiz/openSUSE_Factory/
No ISO (yet) available, as they were really only just checked in to Factory. I started that image from CD and updated all packages from the repository above but with compiz desktop effects on there is still the last tabs shown not the actual. Same with CompizConfig Settings Manager installed and workarounds activated by default.

If I run ls in gnome-terminal quite often the terminal is not redrawn *BUT* if I enable the fix screen updates in XGL with fglrx on my INTEL G945 card it suddenly starts to work (just the 1 minute testing).
This is really strange IMO.
I'm not considering this fixed until the new packages are actually in openSUSE:Factory thus reopening.
Updated compiz-manager was checked-in to Factory on May 28: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-commit/2010-05/msg00626.html The problem you might see is that the logic tries to detect if you have a config (it does not find out if broken or not). If no config exists, it creates a new one (hopefully working). If a config exists, it is being used. can you try deleting / renaming "$HOME/.config/compiz/compizconfig-1/Default.ini" and see if the new result is more useful? It's also possible that the default plugins need further tweaking (the default plugin handling is completely different as it used to be in 11.2, as we had compiz 0.7.8 then, now we're on 0.8.6) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This sounds bad - I use the same home partition right now for 11.2 and 11.3. And now I need to play with compiz settings each time since what works in 11.2 does not work in 11.3 and vice versa ;-(
Whats about a new user with an other (higher) ID number for 11.3 (as a workaround not a solution)? What versions are you (plural)/we really testing/taking about? New compiz-manager with fglrx workaround enabled has just been check-in into Factory: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-commit/2010-06/msg00042.html Will the new one be part of the live CD? (new one =? compizconfig-settings-manager - Settings Manager for Compiz (CCSM) =? compiz-manager 0.6.0-8.1.noarch.rpm 03-Jun-2010 15:53 12K?) Will it be in the USB Images (http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/Factory:/Live/images/ )?
Or will no compiz programs be included and just a trigger/substitute packages-package for all compiz programs be in the Yast2 Software Manager and recommended? New compiz-manager with fglrx workaround enabled has just been check-in into Factory: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-commit/2010-06/msg00042.html.
I have been trying out the version of compiz with the fglrx workaround enabled from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/Compiz/openSUSE_Factory/ The fglrx workaround does solve the laziness problem in all the applications and terminal display also renders correctly now. However when it is enabled on my INTEL 945G chipset, the effects suddenly become very choppy. The performance of glxgears which is around 60fps without the fglrx workaround, drops to around 30fps as well. When only the fglrx workaround is turned off, the effects work without the choppiness, but the problems with terminal display and refreshing display returns. The effects with KDE's compositing does work well on the other hand. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In all the compiz versions that I have tested with 11.3, the Fade plugin is disabled by default. Please have this enabled as it has been there for as long as I can remember and it really makes the effects look much better.
