[Bug 997486] New: gdm cannot start; without admin rights, using GUI is impossible
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=997486 Bug ID: 997486 Summary: gdm cannot start; without admin rights, using GUI is impossible Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: x86-64 OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME Assignee: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: Leon.Meier@yandex.ru QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created attachment 691018 --> http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/attachment.cgi?id=691018&action=edit The output of dmesg $ zypper info gdm | grep Version Version : 3.20.1-4.2 $ zypper info gnome-shell | grep Version Version : 3.20.4-1.2 After the most recent update, at start, the welcome screen of gdm never shows up. Instead, right after boot, all the text on tty1 starts flashing. Typing even a login name into the console is hard: most typed symbols get eaten, very similarly to what is described in https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=973536 Several minutes later the flashing stops, and one can finally login into tty1. GUI remains not usable. The output of dmesg during flashing (captured via network) is attached. Similarly to https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=995924, the gnome-shell always crashes (or seems to crash). Opposed to that bug, gdm does not freeze in our case; gdm seems to restart in our case. If you have admin rights, then, after 5 to 10 minutes or so, you can change gdm to sddm or (failsafe-looking) xdm and reboot; these display managers pose no problems. This, combined with the fact that the bug revealed itself right after the update, makes a software fault the most likely cause (as opposed to, say, a hardware fault or hacking). If you don't have admin rights, you are doomed: the only thing you can do is work in the text console after gdm no more restarts. Any help is appreciated. If some more information is needed, please don't hesitate to drop me a line. coredumpctl gdb 12119 should get to the right trace. You will likely have to install the needed -debuginfo packages (gdm will tell you the zypper command line).
Also: how did you upgrade? using zypper dup? Any incompatible repos that might have blocked full update chains? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I installed packages via "zypper update", not all together, but in portions (so that I could remove some packages I don't need at all, neither in the original, nor in the upgraded form). No incompatibilities were mentioned.
Please use zypper dup - preferably with 3rd party repos disabled to ensure we don't have conflicts there
