I think this log is interesting. Notice the message:
session opened for user gdm by edwinh(uid=0)
but the uid of "edwinh" is 1000, so maybe this has to do with the bug. GDM does
not work because it is not able to read the correct uid of the user, but works
under root because the uid of root is 0.
