[Bug 1089620] New: `startx' fails completely
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1089620 Bug ID: 1089620 Summary: `startx' fails completely Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.3 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org Assignee: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: gin.xem1@gmail.com QA Contact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- When trying to run `startx', using the same X server as the system display mananger does, taking it from `ps' output, it fills the screen with garbage, mostly white. Does not respond sensibly to user input, key presses. So have to cycle power of the machine. Yet to figure (or be told) what information to add here, what to look up on my system. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

startx is no longer supported
Well, how users are supposed to run alternative X environments, including window managers still included in the system? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

feel free to attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Always tried to run additional X server, :1. `/var/log/Xorg.0.log' is likely to be for one on display :0, which is hardly relevant. Anyway, finding no `/var/log/Xorg.1.log'. Does the numeric field mean display number? If yes, how do we have X server run by `startx' write its own log? Confirming that setuid bit of `/usr/bin/Xorg' was unset. Set it by editing `/etc/permissions.local' and running a command as instructed in the beginning of the file. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Any reasons why you want to use startx, when there is already a displaymanager running? It's not recommended to use startx let alone supported. We have several displaymanagers you can chose from independant of the graphical sessions you want to run (xdm, gdm, sddm, lightdm, ...).
Startx can initialize at one set of arbitrary Xorg specifications by one "user" on :0, initialize by another "user" at another arbitrary set of Xorg specifications on :1, initialize by yet another "user" at yet another set of arbitrary specifications on :2, etc. openSUSE and Xorg are provided as multi-user systems. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Any reasons why you want to use startx, when there is already a displaymanager running?
Addititonal reason is protecting one's X clients from any lossage of X system (server or whatever) maintained by display manager, at least multi- display X clients, starting with emacs. Such clients are still included in the system. Even if one of X servers becomes unusable, they can remove their windows from it and continue with ones on other X servers. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

What did you mean by creating all these attachments (in comments 13 through 15)? Is it a suggestion to try similar commands on my system and post the results? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

What did you mean by creating all these attachments (in comments 13 through 15)?
1-Demonstration of comment 15's use case answer to comment 11 2-offer of proof that startx can work on 42.3 (not so easy except through physical presence. sequence of events used: A-each session started from saved session with only Konsole running; B-a script {xfetch} that collects various info states; C-date; D-screenshot made). What I forgot to include in B output is content of the unique custom "xorg.conf" file each user used. Note in all screenshots: 3 on kernel cmdline (startup in multi-user.target), same hostname, different login names, different vttys, different xrandr output, and all shot within seconds of each other.
Is it a suggestion to try similar commands on my system and post the results?
That was not a primary intent, which was 1 above. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

What is it? How do we obtain it?
a script {xfetch} that collects various info states
How do we obtain it?
C-date;
Again, what is it, in this context?
unique custom "xorg.conf" file each user used.
Is it required for `startx' to work? In general, how do we reproduce this procedure of running `startx' on our machines?
3 on kernel cmdline
What is it? Which part of {Kernel command line} do you mean?
(startup in multi-user.target),

(In reply to Felix Miata from comment #19)
unique custom "xorg.conf" file each user used. Is it required for `startx' to work?
Required, no, but I did use the ones combined into this attachment. Note in attachment 767902 that the script's grep output in the Konsole window shows PreferredMode and DisplaySize lines from /etc/X11/xorg.conf used by attachment 767900 rather than the exported XORGCONFIG=xorg.<username> file it utilized. Since for 767901 /etc/X11/xorg.conf did not exist, the script output "no such file" for the PreferredMode and DisplaySize greps. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Using rv516 Radeon X1300 on TW and 42.3 without xf86-video-ati installed, I get garbage on both (dual head) displays trying to run startx, though Ctrl-Alt-BS does abort the session attempt. Both screens produce normal output from startx after installing xf86-video-ati. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

42.3 without xf86-video-ati installed,
after installing xf86-video-ati.
Do have this package installed, and so was at the time of events described in the initial report. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
