[Bug 913527] New: Please get rid of PackageKit completely from default install media
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=913527 Bug ID: 913527 Summary: Please get rid of PackageKit completely from default install media Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Factory Version: 201501* Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: libzypp Assignee: zypp-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: sb56637@gmail.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Hi guys, I just did a fresh of install of Tumbleweed (20150107) from the Gnome Live media. I am once again remembering why I immediately deleted PackageKit* (everything related to it) on my previous install. It's seriously awful software. I tried to run the "Package Updater" program (which I believe depends on PackageKit), and it shows nothing except the "refreshing software lists" progress bar stuck at about 50%. Unusable. So I tried the YaST2 Software Management tool, and the first thing is does is spew an ugly error that PackageKit is blocking software management. It offers to ask PackageKit to quit, when I tried 5 times, but it usually fails. Also unusable. I fail to see the value of adding another layer between RPM and Zypper. It provides no useful features to the user and prevents other major things from working. I do know how to remove PackageKit and use the excellent YaST tools and/or zypper, but this junk shouldn't be included by default on a professional distro like openSUSE. Thanks for looking into this and hopefully making some changes. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

To clarify: This bug is assigned to libzypp, which is used by the PK backend as well as by YAST and zypper. It's libzypps current locking policy which causes the PK backend blocking YAST and zypper (and vice versa). This is what will be addressed here. For anything truly PK related, like the above unhelpful PackageKit dialog, please open a separate bug and assign component GNOME. This is where PK is maintained. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Ping - is there any kind of ETA to get libzypp lock the DB in a smarter way? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
