[Bug 1020283] New: Boot hung using kernel 4.9.3 in TW snapshot 20170116 - not yet released snapshot
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1020283 Bug ID: 1020283 Summary: Boot hung using kernel 4.9.3 in TW snapshot 20170116 - not yet released snapshot Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: x86-64 OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel Assignee: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: robby.engelmann@igfs-ev.de QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created attachment 710334 --> http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=710334&action=edit hwinfo.txt I upgraded this morning to the next upcoming snapshot of TW. I saw the KDE and crypt-setup tests mainly passed in openqa and wanted to give the new systemd a try. However, booting into kernel 4.9.3 results in black screen at the point where I should give my passphase for the lvm-luks crypt-setup of my machine. I only see a blinking cursor and cannot do anything. See attachment for hwinfo. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Could anybody post the result of a failing case with debug log enabled (add "debug printk.devkmsg=on" on the kernel command line before booting) ?
That's impossible for me. Because "failing" means "failing to mount root filesystem", nothing gets saved to /var/log. I can't get the log that it did generate when I ran like that.
If it's not always failing the same logs for the working case might be interesting too.
It always fails. It fails when "enable.plymouth=0" too. It did ask me for the password with "single" and allowed me to get back into my system.
Oh and use the latest versions of all packages.
Everything is up-to-date with Tumbleweed. If you don't mind, I'm increasing the severity to Critical because this is a fail-to-boot scenario, including the Rescue Mode entries in GRUB. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

If it fails to mount root, add rd.shell kernel parameter, you should be dropped into dracut shell. In which you can mount USB stick and copy dmesg there. You may need to regenerate initrd to include usb-storage and stick filesystem kernel modules and to pass log_buf_len=16M (or larger) to ensure kernel printk buffer is large enough. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Thanks, I will try. I don't think I will need USB storage, as I can save to /boot which is ext4. It will take a few days. Hopefully by Friday. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

BTW, don't get your hopes up. I don't think I'll get anything useful. Possible scenarios: * with rd.shell, it not ask for the password, in which case the problem will not have (yet) happened and there will be nothing useful to be logged and inspected * with rd.shell, it will ask for the password like "single" does, where the problem is bypassed * the problem will happen and, like right now, leave the keyboard inoperative and therefore I won't be able to even run dmesg (when it happens, CapsLock doesn't turn the LED on; I have to do Alt+SysRq,B to reboot) Are you sure that rd.shell will drop me to a shell *after* it tries to mount the root filesystem? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

It always fails.
It fails when "enable.plymouth=0" too.
Then that's a different issue, please open a new bug report and post the debug log there (with plymouth disabled). This bug is about plymouth not showing the password prompt. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Right, though why plymouth seems to have a problem is easy: it's crashing. I've got two core dumps I can share (Tumbleweed) and I posted an analysis on the null-pointer dereference to the bug report linked to this one. The thing is: the crash happens when I use "single", so I am not sure if it is the same cause. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I assume I had a similar problem prior to the systemd-update: on some boots I only got the textmode password prompt. Thus, it seems to me (at least in my case) the problem was there before, but now, the textmode password prompt is not shown anymore.
When plymouth switches to text mode (an indication that some critical error message was seen), the prompt may be hidden between other system output. I have this very often. You can normally simply type the password (you should see a "*" for every key stroke on the text console). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
