[Bug 383083] New: Cannot connect to any wireless networks with iwl4965
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=383083 Summary: Cannot connect to any wireless networks with iwl4965 Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: quentin.jackson@exclamation.co.nz QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Customer Apologies if this is a duplicate but there is so much detail in these wireless bugs that is beyond my ability. In my case using the above driver with no wireless encryption (for testing purposes) I cannot connect to a wireless network using network manager or traditional ifup. It seems to fail on DHCP request. I'll try keep 11 on for a few days incase someone wants me to post some logs however with the most fundamental part not working I will have to go back to 10.3 shortly :( DMESG output below: No security, wireless connection log, OpenSuSE 11 Apr 24 11:15:52 linux klogd: wlan0: Initial auth_alg=0 Apr 24 11:15:52 linux klogd: wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:1d:7e:aa:1d:4a Apr 24 11:15:52 linux klogd: wlan0: Initial auth_alg=0 Apr 24 11:15:52 linux klogd: wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:1d:7e:aa:1d:4a Apr 24 11:15:52 linux klogd: wlan0: RX authentication from 00:1d:7e:aa:1d:4a (alg=0 transaction=2 status=0) Apr 24 11:15:52 linux klogd: wlan0: authenticated Apr 24 11:15:52 linux klogd: wlan0: associate with AP 00:1d:7e:aa:1d:4a Apr 24 11:15:52 linux klogd: wlan0: RX ReassocResp from 00:1d:7e:aa:1d:4a (capab=0x421 status=0 aid=1) Apr 24 11:15:52 linux klogd: wlan0: associated Apr 24 11:15:52 linux klogd: wlan0: switched to short barker preamble (BSSID=00:1d:7e:aa:1d:4a) Apr 24 11:15:52 linux klogd: wlan0 (WE) : Wireless Event too big (366) Apr 24 11:15:52 linux klogd: wlan0: WMM queue=2 aci=0 acm=0 aifs=3 cWmin=15 cWmax=1023 burst=0 Apr 24 11:15:52 linux klogd: wlan0: WMM queue=3 aci=1 acm=0 aifs=7 cWmin=15 cWmax=1023 burst=0 Apr 24 11:15:52 linux klogd: wlan0: WMM queue=1 aci=2 acm=0 aifs=2 cWmin=7 cWmax=15 burst=30 Apr 24 11:15:52 linux klogd: wlan0: WMM queue=0 aci=3 acm=0 aifs=2 cWmin=3 cWmax=7 burst=15 Apr 24 11:15:52 linux dhclient: Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Client V3.0.6 Apr 24 11:15:52 linux dhclient: Copyright 2004-2007 Internet Systems Consortium. wmaster0_rename: unknown hardware address type
This line is no problem. It just tells us that wmaster0_rename is not a wireless interface. Firmware seems to be installed as otherwise a association would not be possible (see dmesg in comment #0). Quentin, could you please try the following: $ rcnetwork stop $ ifconfig wlan0 up $ iwconfig wlan0 essid your_essid Wait a few seconds and attach the output of dmesg. $ dhcpcd wlan0 Verify if you got an IP using ifconfig. Thanks. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Can you manually connect using wpa_supplicant (if you need instructions feel free to ask)?
I started to write a wpa_suppicant howto at [1] but that is not ready yet. [1] http://en.opensuse.org/Tracking_down_wireless_problems -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Is there a way to disable the 11n on the 4965 instead of the AP?
I only wanted to know if disabling 11n fixes the issue for Quentin. It's only a workaround for this issue, not the solution. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

One more point, I understand the whole route thing with two cards on one network. However a network manager should and in 10.3 'did' take care of it on between the two cards for me. I have a docking station which uses wired in the office and the rest of the house I use wireless. I don't see this as being particularly uncommon at all.
You're right. It is not uncommon and network manager as well as ifup when using ifplugd startmode take care about this. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Just to answer the few previous questions:
No, the router was not off or rebooting plus the DHCP server in that router was working via ethernet cable right before starting this test.
I just see in the log, that it needed > 40 secs to get a lease from this router over the cable (eth0): start at 18:25:36, got IP at 18:26:18... I'm using a Fritz!Box 7270 as AP with dhcp on a linksys connected to it via cable and get an IP in <= 1 second. But this was an eth0 interface and IMO a different story.
Also I did try but forgot to mention this setup running on windows on the same computer going to the same AP (so only difference was windows vs linux) and it didn't miss a beat. Plus as I've said, the same machine works under Opensuse 10.3 perfectly.
Yes, as far as I see, there is a problem with the driver so the association with the AP breaks. See also comment #79, Klaus can reproduce similar problems -- even if there is a difference: deauthenticated vs. disassociate.
Sorry about not attaching above, I believe the instructions I was sent to read said not to attach things, thought sounds like I must have misread that.
Not a problem, never mind. I didn't asked to attach, just to provide. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I tried again using 2.6.25.18 and it seems to work OK but not great. I also upgraded my firmware to iwlwifi-4965-ucode-228.57.1.21 and it works much better.
Thanks for the info. However as 11.1 is shipping 2.6.27 which has a huge number of iwlwifi patches and should behave much better than 2.6.25 I close this one as FIXED now. If anybody experiences connection issues in 11.1 again please open a new bug report. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
