[Bug 996834] New: Leap 42.2 Beta 1: KDE Kontact: no configuration Wizard at first start -- Akonadi Assistant continually "starting"
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=996834 Bug ID: 996834 Summary: Leap 42.2 Beta 1: KDE Kontact: no configuration Wizard at first start -- Akonadi Assistant continually "starting" Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.2 Hardware: x86-64 OS: SUSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE Applications Assignee: opensuse-kde-bugs@opensuse.org Reporter: bugrprt21882@online.de QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Clicked "Personal Information Manager (Kontact)" in the "Office" part of the "Application Menu". For those used to KDE4 Plasma, nothing happened (initially) but, after a minute or so (could have 3 or 5 minutes) Kontact came up at the "Summary" tab. A minute or so later, the Akonadi "Account Assistant" appeared as a running task but, only shows a "Starting Akonadi Server" progress bar. ------------------------------------------------------------- A wizard inviting one to set-up the e-Mail account and access did not appear; despite this being a "normal" and functioning behaviour of KDE4 Plasma Kontact. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

In any case, bug reports about the KDE Applications in 42.2 Beta 1 are useless at this point, as they have been just taken over from 42.1.
I'd like to add that 42.1 installed KDEPIM4 by default and the KDEPIM5 packages included are not designed to replace KDEPIM4 automatically (on Leap at least). This may result in problems currently. I just noticed that we do yet have to adapt the KDEPIM5 packages to replace KDEPIM4 on Leap as well, currently this is only done on Tumbleweed even in the latest packages. As kdepim4 is not even included in 42.2 any more, this is necessary... -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

If this continues the supposition will be made that, Leap 42.2 Beta 1 testing is with respect to KDE Plasma 5 applications, **worthless** . . .
Yes it is. And that's what has been stated on the Alpha release announcements too, but is missing in the Beta1 announcement for some reason. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

In other words, with respect to KDE Applications, Leap 42.2 will be a repeat of Leap 42.1 . . . (Very embarrassing for both openSUSE and KDE . . . ) -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I don't understand you. What do you mean exactly with that? But I hope it is clear for you that we (openSUSE's KDE team) have to follow the KDE release schedules. And we are only going to ship stable releases anyway, the plan is the latest 16.08.x. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

With reference to a comment made by Richard Harris at osc16: yes, Leap 42.1 was, sadly, initially a KDE disaster. So, what can testers do to help avoid the same situation with Leap 42.2?
From where I'm sitting: Test, Test, Test . . . -- and preferably with the Beta releases . . .
If the delivery schedule of the KDE components is not early enough for Beta testing to find the things which will annoy the user community then, there is a danger that, the Leap 42.2 release will not be well received. The worst thing that can happen is, that the Kontact user community will remain with the KDE4 Plasma version (despite the occasional segment faults when the mail archive runs). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I don't know Richard Harris, not what comment he made at osc16. What was this about? The applications? Or rather the desktop? In any case, I wouldn't call it a disaster really. But that's rather irrelevant here now anyway.

The 16.08.0 packages are in Tumbleweed since yesterday, and they are available in KDE:Applications for over a week (also for 42.2). You can use the latter (do a full switch) if you want to test them in 42.2. Submitting the nearly 200 16.04.x packages to 42.2 and getting bug reports about them from 42.2 testers doesn't make much sense either, considering that they are not what we will ship in 42.2, and they were in Tumbleweed anyway.
The worst thing that can happen is, that the Kontact user community will remain with the KDE4 Plasma version (despite the occasional segment faults when the mail archive runs).
KDEPIM4 is not/will not be included in 42.2. 42.1 did ship with KDEPIM4, so if this is your main concern I even more don't understand your comments about 42.1 having been a disaster at all. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Did you do a full switch to the repo? (either via "zypper dup --from xxx" or YaST's "Switch system packages...") I just noticed that KDE:Applications for 42.2 is building against KDE:Frameworks5 though. So you likely have to add that one as well (and switch to it), the latest 5.25 release is not in 42.2 Beta1 yet either. Sorry for not mentioning that before, as I wan't aware of it. http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Frameworks5/openSUSE_Leap_42.... -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Frameworks5/openSUSE_Leap_42. 2/ Also noticed that when I began somewhat later this morning -- Added KDE:Frameworks5 ("Switch system packages").
----------------------------------------------------------- KDE:Applications also had an update this morning. After getting the Applications and Frameworks sorted out Kontact started and the Wizard ran. - Added the Bug Report e-Mail account via the Wizard -- everything connected to the 1&1 server as expected -- encrypted connections (SSL/TLS (receive) and TLS (transmit)) were set-up correctly by the Wizard. - Noticed that, sent e-Mails weren't showing up in the "Sent" folder. - Akregator is running correctly with the default KDE News Feeds. - Closed down Kontact and then restarted it -- it crashed with a segment fault. - Attempted to add the debuginfo packages -- failed due to the repositories not being able to be resolved. - Restarted again -- the sent e-Mails are now visible in the "Sent" folder. - E-Mail sent to the Bug Report address are received and displayed correctly. ----------------------------------------------------------- I now believe that, with the KDE Applications and Framework version 16.08.0, the Beta testers will have sufficient time to discover any remaining issues with Leap 42.2 KDE. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
