[Bug 1048660] New: LibreOffice 5.3.3 update: Type 1 (Postscript) fonts are no longer supported.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1048660 Bug ID: 1048660 Summary: LibreOffice 5.3.3 update: Type 1 (Postscript) fonts are no longer supported. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.2 Hardware: x86-64 OS: openSUSE 42.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Release Notes Assignee: sknorr@suse.com Reporter: bugrprt21882@online.de QA Contact: lnussel@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- 13th July 2017: With the Leap 42.2 upgrade of LibreOffice from version 5.2.5 to version 5.3.3 the fact that, with version 5.3 LibreOffice has dropped support for Type 1 (Postscript) fonts was a not so pleasant surprise. Please consider placing a note indicating that, LibreOffice as of version 5.3 no longer supports Type 1 (Postscript) fonts in the Release Notes. Is also, possibly an issue for the Leap 42.3 Release Notes. --------------------------------------------------------- I haven't found anything in the LibreOffice Release Notes indicating this issue: <https://www.libreoffice.org/download/release-notes/> There's only this article in "Linux Magazine": <http://www.linux-magazine.com/Online/Blogs/Off-the-Beat-Bruce-Byfield-s-Blog/LibreOffice-drops-Type-1-font-support> There's information in this Document Foundation Bug Report: Bug 104701 <https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104701> --------------------------------------------------------- There's possibly help for the folks (like me) with a suite of Type 1 fonts here: <https://slackbuilds.org/repository/14.2/system/afdko/> Haven't tried to build the "Adobe Font Development Kit for OpenType" yet -- will happen later today. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1048660 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1048660#c4 --- Comment #4 from Donald Curtis <bugrprt21882@online.de> --- On the other hand, the people affected are mostly, those who have purchased Type 1 fonts: * Therefore, the issue around converting the existing Type 1 fonts to OpenType is, IMHO, a commercial issue and not, an open source issue. Therefore, whether or not LibreOffice users choose to convert their existing Type 1 font collections to OpenType, or not, is a purely personal, commercial, decision (IMHO). Please note that, Adobe had converted their entire (commercial) font library to OpenType by the end of the year 2002. Currently, font foundries tend to offer OpenType as the "normal" format and, the commercial print industry has, AFAIK, also mostly migrated from Postscript to OpenType . . . --------------------------------------------------------- Therefore, the purpose of this Change Request is to, simply, make the world aware of the change LibreOffice has made and, to trigger those folks who have not, yet, migrated their purchased fonts from Postscript to OpenType, to do so . . . -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Options->LibreOffice/Advanced->Open Expert Configuration, change the property /org.openoffice.Office/Common/VCL/TextLayoutEngine to "old". That option has been/will be removed in 5.4 though: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/5.4#Removed_configuration_o... -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

FYI: In LibreOffice 5.3.x it is possible to switch back to the old rendering engine which does still support/allow to use Type 1 fonts too. Options->LibreOffice/Advanced->Open Expert Configuration, change the property /org.openoffice.Office/Common/VCL/TextLayoutEngine to "old".
Attempted to use this workaround: - restored all my Postscript fonts to /usr/local/share/fonts; - fonts-config -f and fc-cache -f; - LibreOffice Writer picks up the Postscript fonts in the Font Selection menüs; - but, Writer doesn't display them in any existing document which was using them; - also not in a new document which uses them. --------------------------------------------------------- Resetting the VCL TextLayoutEngine parameter to "new" and reverting the Postscript fonts to OpenType, results in Writer displaying existing documents as expected. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
