[Bug 1120405] New: Serial Wacom tablet and touchscreen (X201t) not detected in Tumbleweed/15.0
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1120405 Bug ID: 1120405 Summary: Serial Wacom tablet and touchscreen (X201t) not detected in Tumbleweed/15.0 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: x86-64 OS: openSUSE Factory Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel Assignee: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: syscrh@mailbox.org QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Hi, I've installed openSUSE Leap 15.0 GNOME (via the DVD image from May) onto my ThinkPad X201 Tablet. Apparently the Wacom tablet (connected via serial; pen input) and the touchscreen doesn't work/isn't even detected ("xsetwacom --list devices" returns nothing). Switching between Xorg and Wayland doesn't change anything. But the touchscreen and Wacom EMR digitizer are working within the DVD installation (YaST installer). This happens with openSUSE Leap 15.0 without any upgrades, Leap 15.0 upgraded to the latest packages (via zypper dup; Linux 4.12.14-lp150.12.28-default) and the current Tumbleweed 20181224 snapshot (upgraded from Leap 15.0; Linux 4.19.11-1-default). The Wacom tablet and the touchscreen are working with Debian Buster, Fedora 29 and Ubuntu 18.04, so this seems to be a problem with openSUSE. Apart from the following reddit post, I didn't find any similar reports, so I guess this bug isn't reported yet: https://www.reddit.com/r/openSUSE/comments/8z409x/wacom_pens_arent_recognize... I don't know how I can assist you with debugging this issue. If you need any log files/more information from me, it would be nice, if you could say what you need and how I can get the info for you. Thank you! -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I've managed to get the serial Wacom tablet working under Xorg (looked at the Xorg.0.log wacom error). I've added myself to the dialout group (see attached contents of /dev/) and after a relogin the digitizer and touchscreen are working fine. I don't know if this is intentional, but even if it is, it should be documented somewhere.
Thanks for spotting out. So the X problem looks like a device permission issue. Maybe we need to put uaccess tag to these devices in udev rules. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Could you try to put the patch below as /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/70-wacom-uaccess.rules and retest without dialout group? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

For TW, it's another question. Basically you don't have to install wacom X driver to enable this serial device at all but only inputattach and systemd file. So I guess we can consider creating a sub-package. (Or even drop the old inputattach from gpm and share with the new one.)
For X (and Wayland) as long as everything goes through evdev and libinput we don't actually care about what goes on in kernel. That has been the intent behind the FATE. In SLE15-SP1 the kernel support for serial wacom devices is on. Hence SP2 should keep that feature. IMHO configs between TW and SLE should be as similar as possible. And if we have kernel support we should also ship the latest inputattach in TW. Now I am sure that we will not want to probe for such old devices. Hence I see no great value in a separate package for inputattach. So I think we should just update it to the latest version in the package we currently ship it. This is ancient hardware after all. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Why...? The kernel does and will support the device. And, there is already a package that can provide the latest inputattach program (linuxconsoletools). We messed up the packaging because of different inputattach binaries provided by several individual packages by some (likely historical) reason. So, what's really missing in the whole picture is only the systemd unit file. Maybe we can put this into linuxconsoletools package altogether. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
