[Bug 956403] New: Installation system turns off wireless (why? WHY?)
http://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=956403 Bug ID: 956403 Summary: Installation system turns off wireless (why? WHY?) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.1 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation Assignee: yast2-maintainers@suse.de Reporter: silviu_marin-caea@otpbank.ro QA Contact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- I'm trying to install 42.1 on a HP Compaq nx7400 laptop. This machine has a hardware button that can turn WiFi on and off. It also has a blue LED indicator for this. I wrote the Network Installation .iso to an USB stick and proceeded to install, the plan was to do it over wireless. Early on the installation, the WiFi is turned off, remains off and then the installation system complains that it cannot get an IP. That stupid hardware button does not work anymore to turn WiFi on again. I have to go to BIOS and reset to defaults to get WiFi back. Why would 42.1 turn off WiFi? I have 13.2 installed on this laptop and it did not do that. The wireless board is Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Could you install rfkill package and check its output? Also, try to blacklist hp_wmi kernel module. This works often badly.
This happens in the early stage of installation, as you see in the video. The context is this: - I already have 13.2 on this laptop, WiFi works - I am trying to install Leap, through WiFI. This is where the bug comes alive. The installation system turns off WiFi, then complains that it can't get an address, through WiFi. After this happens, I can't use the button to turn WiFi on again, I go to BIOS and load defaults. But the button is not the problem, I don't care about it. My expectation would by that WiFi is left alone and I can use it to install the OS. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

hp-wmi.ko _is_ part of the installation system.
Oh, it may be loaded during installation? It's good to know! Then the first thing to try is to test the installation with brokenmodules=hp-wmi boot option. If this doesn't change the behavior, check the questions and procedures mentioned in comment 9. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

This works, WiFi remains on with brokenmodules=hp_wmi But my problem still remains, can't install over wireless. 1. This is an usability issue: it should not ask me for ESSID, it should scan for available networks and let me choose one. 2. Even if I enter the ESSID, it still doesn't obtain an IP through DHCP. It's not a local problem, I have two phones that use WiFi, and this very laptop also works if I boot 13.2 I'll open new bugs. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Silvu, do you mean Leap, or Tumbleweed?
brokenmodules=hp_wmi works with both, WiFi stays on. After that, I tried installing Leap. I'll try TW, too. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

silviulaptop:~ # rfkill list all 0: hci0: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 1: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no
What shows rfkill list when no hp-wmi module is loaded? hci0 might disappear, but what about WiFi? If my understand is correct, phy0 comes from the Intel WiFi driver itself, and the WiFi rfkill from hp-wmi seems missing in the above. This can be the problem. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

This laptop also has three more buttons for audio mute and volume up, down. I don't know if hp_wmi is supposed to handle those too, but I confirm they work properly without it.
The other buttons are controlled differently. The audio buttons are handled directly by ACPI and sound driver. The others like the power button are also handled by ACPI. Only the WiFi/BT key, the dock station port state and the ambient light sensor are handled by hp-wmi, AFAIK. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

### Without hp_wmi, only with "wmi", WiFi and hardware button work. silviulaptop:~ # lsmod | grep wmi wmi 16384 0 silviulaptop:~ # rfkill list all 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 2: hci0: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no
### Load hp_wmi silviulaptop:~ # modprobe hp_wmi ### The WiFi LED goes out, button does not do anything
silviulaptop:~ # rfkill list all 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes 3: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: no 4: hp-bluetooth: Bluetooth Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: no 5: hp-gps: GPS Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: yes
What happens if you press WiFi button? Doesn't the output of rfkill change? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
