[Bug 979566] New: uxterm complains about missing fonts and refuses to display UTF8
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=979566 Bug ID: 979566 Summary: uxterm complains about missing fonts and refuses to display UTF8 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: x86-64 OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org Assignee: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: j_k_v@ro.ru QA Contact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Package: xterm Version: 324-1.2 In Gnome, when starting user@host:~> [1] 7169 user@host:~> xterm: cannot load font '-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal-*-18-120-100-100-c-90-iso10646-1' we get a new uxterm window in which UTF-8 characters are not displayed; we see blank spaces instead. One can press Ctrl+RightMouse and choose TrueType, after which we start seeing UTF-8 chars. But this is nonautomatic and changes the font size and the window size. Where do I get '-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal-*-18-120-100-100-c-90-iso10646-1' from in Tumbleweed and how can I make uxterm use it? The package xorg-x11-fonts-core is indeed installed.
Did you check this on the machine where the Xserver is running - in case you run across the network? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I ran the "xlsfonts | grep ..." command over ssh, and it gave positive results then. Now I'm finally on the machine in question directly. In the meantime the machine had some installations, including that of xfd, and was rebooted. Let's see now the results of all the commands from a fresh uxterm; they are somewhat different (don't ask me why): [ user@host:~> sudo zypper info xorg-x11-fonts-core | egrep "(Version:)|(Installed:)" Version: 7.6-31.6 Installed: Yes user@host:~> xlsfonts | grep misc-fixed-medium-r-normal-*-18-120-100-100-c-90-iso10646-1 user@host:~> xfd -fn -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--18-120-100-100-c-90-iso10646-1 Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion Warning: Cannot convert string "-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--18-120-100-100-c-90-iso10646-1" to type FontStruct xfd: no font to display user@host:~> ] When you enter characters from another alphabet via keyboard (say, cyrillic) into the uxterm, you get a blank space pro character. That is, entering "йцукен" from the keyboard gives 6 spaces. However, you can select these spaces with a mouse and copy them elsewhere, say, into a gedit, where you do see the originally typed "йцукен". When you start a gnome konsole, you do see every cyrillic character that you enter in the konsole directly. If I can do some further debugging, please tell me so. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
