I've read that there is a new version of nouveau upcoming with kernel 4.15, perhaps we'll just wait for this? It seems that I'm the only one stuck with nvidia optimus hardware and wanting to use another monitor... If I really wanted to test, I shall try to put the following line into /etc/environment: export MUTTER_ALLOW_HYBRID_GPUS=1 That should deactivate the check in GNOME and allow wayland.
