Thanks Bj�rn, unfortunately it still does not detect the external monitor. WaylandEnable=false in /etc/gdm/custom.conf is commented out and I rebooted with "Gnome", (not "Gnome Xorg"). Re-plugging while running didn't seem to help. I assume "gdm" is the login screen after booting? I chose GNOME as my default in this fresh install.
